Sorry but I think he and the Clash are hugely overrated. There has been a lot of revisionism over the last 30 years. At the time no-one thought the Clash were any big deal although obviously they had their fans. With hindsight you could say that their incorporation of black music styles was different to other "punk" bands but their later line-ups were dire. Joe Strummer was a rubbish singer but he looked the part and of course dying young has always been a good career move.

It depends who you speak to and what incarnation you are referring to.I think it's hard to pick any band who were in any one person's opinion great from start to finish throughout their career.
I saw The Clash and can confirm that they were a really excellent punk band. However, it only lasted a couple of albums and then they were mediocre at best. It's kind of sad to me that they are remembered more for 'Should I Stay..' and 'London Calling' than for 'What's My Name?' and the epic, 'Complete Control' etc .......

if you listen to the last album joe strummer recorded, streetcore, its an excellent album, for me its along the lines of johnny cash's american IV, although strummer of course wasnt aware of his mortality in the same cash was.
the clash were far more than a punk band, and yet their 'punk' songs they recorded can stand the test of time as well as anyones.
no-one else has done, punk, rock, rock n roll, reggae and everything in between in the manner the clash did
all imho of course
