Briefest significant musical phenomena?

On the walk to work this morning I had my MP3 player on shuffle and The Darkness cropped up. They always remind me of the summer of 2003 - I saw this virtually unknown band open Glastonbury and the next week they were huge. By the end of the year they'd faded into obscurity again.

Can anyone top that?

The Ting Tings, huge now, next year I doubt it.

Maroon 5 were everywhere a couple of years ago, not anymore.
