If you want to get into Joy Division, they only made 3 proper albums, Unknown Pleasures, Closer and Still, which is a live recording. The singles they released weren't included on these albums, so the best bet is to get the Heart and Soul box-set, which includes all their studio recordings plus other live tracks that don't appear on Still. It's an excellent 4 disc compilation, and available for around £20, it's good value.

New Order have made a lot more albums, not all of them great(mostly later stuff). Movement is the first album they made after becoming New Order, and isn't the best record they made or particularly representative of their style.

"Power, Corruption and Lies", Brotherhood, Lowlife and Technique are all brilliant. Republic isn't my favourite album by a long way, but it contains the excellent single Regret.

As with Joy Division, up until Technique a lot of New Order's singles weren't featured on their albums. The best single compilation IMO is Substance, which features all the singles upto 1987, along with the best of the B-sides.

They kind of lost it after Republic came out, although they released some decent singles the albums aren't really worth bothering with.

If you like what you've heard then it's worth checking out some of the side projects they got involved with, particulaly Barney Sumner and Johnny Marr's Electronic and Peter Hook's Monaco.

Edited to add, I think they are fantastic, and one of the best bands ever.

Wise words, also if you are buying for the first time, the New Order albums have been re released as two disc versions with loads of extras, well worth it especially Technique and Brotherhood.

Also watch the film 'Control' yes

My other favourite band from this time is Talking Heads.

I don't know how well they are known now, but they are also superb.

Worth a listen.

If you want to hear where Joy Division came from, then track down a copy of the Warsaw album - this is Joy Division before they were Joy Division and of couirse subsequently New Order.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw_(Joy_Division_...

Also worth tracking down is the Peel Sessions album with the 2 John Peel sessions from 31 January and 26 November 1979

Another fan here - got (in both meanings of the word) all the Joy Division stuff retrospectively, but it's no exaggeration to state that it was Blue Monday that really ignited my passion for music. smile

Just get the Joy Division live album: Les Bains Douches 18 December 1979 [Live]

Sheeeiiite!! I just looked on Amazon, the CD album is worth £50-80 now!! Wow, I did'nt realise CD albums could fetch good money. Still, it is an absolute classic. Also, check the films "24 Hour, Party People" & "Control". Genius band.

The tracks from the Warsaw album are available on Heart and Soul.

Good call on the Peel sessions.
