Hi all,

I've been into house/dance music for years and have become a bit of a bedroom DJ. I put this mix together yesterday and a few of my mates suggest I should get some gigs, as they think im ok.

I would welcome some feedback from some unbiased people, so if you fancy downloading a free one hour mix of house/progy dance music with some oldies and current stuff all together, then here is a link:

www.megaupload.com/?d=32Y9OZ40

Go to the link and then enter the 3 digit/letter code displayed in the top right hand corner into the box, and then click on [download], wait a few seconds and then you get the option to download the file.

Cheers, Andy

Thanks fo sharing this, I'm a DJ to, play a few clubs and events around the south east. Just having a listen now, couple of comments if thats ok?

You drop Dark & Long after about 10/12 mins, is that the original version, as something sounds a little out of tune when it's in the mix. Watch out for the tuning of tracks when mixing them together. Also the mix around 25 mins feels a little abrupt.

On a positive note, some quality tunes and really nice long smooth mixes what is the track at 42 mins, forgotten it. Is it Way Out West? And you played the quality tune Cocktail Bar on the hour, I'm caining that myself at the moment.

Out of interest what kit did you use to mix it on? Your mates are rigth that it's pretty good, in my humble opinion there is nothing wrong with the mixing, it's nicely in time, but try and think more about the phrasing which parts of the tunes your mixing together, and you will make your mixes sound more dynamic.

Anyway, just my view, really enjoyed listening to it, so thanks for sharing. I will be posting my new mix on here later on tonight, so be sure to have a listen and let know what you think.

Cheers

Thanks so much for the feedback.
The 3rd track is Aftermath by Pryda and I find that it blends perfectly with Underworlds Dark and Long that I bring in on top about 3 mins later. I keep them both going together for a good few mins - maybe thats why it sounds slighly different? In hindsight I wished that I'd bought it in about a minute earlier than i did over Aftermath.
Your dead right about 42 mins in - its Mindcircus - way out west - love that tune!
And love that cocktail bar too!
Totally agree about the mix into 'At Night' - was a bit untidy - it has such a wierd intro. Its the one bit of the mix i was unhappy with.
As for kit, I use 2 x Pioneer CDJ1000's and an Allen & Heath Xone62.
Really glad you liked it - I recently got made redundant and I fancy doing something a bit more fun. Maybe I could cut it as a DJ? wink
I'm downloading your mix right now - the tracklist sounds awesome!
Cheers - Andy

Just looking at your website - see you are into Ableton Live. As soon as I can learn how to get those timewarp markings working, Im dying to move onto a laptop as I can see the amazing amount of creativity thats available!
You dont run a course on it do you?

Good stuff, you have decent kit for the job, thats half the battle. I moved to Ableton about a year ago now, was on CDJ's like yours, but fancied a new challenge. I now run off a Macbook Pro, with a four stereo channel firewire soundcard into a Pioneer DJM800, and then use an Evolution Midi controller for effects etc. It works really well.

As for the warping, I found it a total nightmare to start with, but once you get the hang it's the easiest thing, you just have to develop the same method for every track you warp. I've done well over 2000 tracks now, and they all run in time beautifully.

I don't run a course, but would be more than happy to try adn give you some pointers or a demo some time. Where you live?

Ive been really interested in Ableton since I first read about it. Downloaded the demo a couple of times but just couldnt get the timewarping worked out so gave up. Their demo tutorial was awful!

I recently got the bug again and decided that If i could getr it sussed id invest in a macbook and all the necessary gubbins to hook it up, but so far nobody has been able to actually show me or tell me what I need to make it work as I want. I was trying to get on a course, but all the ones i was interested in didnt cover what i wanted or were on when i couldnt attend!

I live in Sidcup, Kent so if the offer of a demo is open, that would be fantastic?

Your just showing how little you know, it's not what you do or how you do it that counts. It's what it sounds like thats important.

Sorry to thread hijack but..........

Can this ableton live programme take a live rock song like an ACDC number and then correct intros, verses, chorus, middle 8's seperately into a rock solid timing for the whole song?
i try and link live recordings, but the timing floats quite a bit, especially when the drummers get excited! chorus's speeds up, intro's quicken etc etc
Can it "fix" those?

Hi, yes you could tweak this wit Ableton, however, if the tempo of the track is designed to stay the same altering so it was the same for the whole track mightmake the record sound rather strange. Though the theory of what your asking is possible, it just may take some time to do.

Once you know what your doing you can "warp" (as it's called) a standard house record in 4/4 time in a less than a minute. However, something with a less regular beat may require tweaks in every bar, so could take much, much longer.

Can you explain any clearer what your after, as I may be able to warp the track for you, and send it back to you if I understand whats required.

Cheers

If i place an mp3 track which has a human drummer in Traktor or Torq then the timing/bpm gradually drifts. I've noticed that mainly this occurs at just at breaks and as the passage of music changes from intro to verse or from verse to chorus. Once they are in the verse or chorus most drummers are fine.

Intro XX Verse Verse XX Chorus Verse XX Middle8 Chorus outtro

xx marks where most timing problems seem to occur. If i could divide a song up into these basic chunks, then correct the bpm in each segment individually but linked to a master tempo so the pitch stays correct, then save as an mp3 it would be good.

You may not need to break it into chunks, but either way Ableton would allow you to break it in to chunks and then adjust the timing for each, place them back in the right order and then render it to a wav, it won't do MP3,but it's easy enough to get software to convert wav to mp3. If you need any help dropm e a private message and I'll see what I can do.
