My favourite Keane song ever has just been released to radio stations and will be out on single in a few weeks. They've chopped half the lyrics apart!! The structure of the lyrics isn't poetic anymore, and entire meaning of the song has been lost frown

Does this annoy anyone else? Surely the 5 minute pop song is quite normal now - do they really need to ruin songs to play them on the radio? furious

On another note, is this why Pink Floyd have the best selling album but got nowhere with singles?...

It has been the case for years that 3 minute something is more popular with radio stations than 5 minute plus.

Thats also why you hardly ever hear a long intro to a song or a lead break.

Listeners have a short attention span, and radio stations get paid by the amount of listeners they have so they have to vote with their pockets. Also a 3 minute song has more chance of being fit into a fixed schedule than a 5 minute one.

It kind of like why you never heard the full versions of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'I would do Anything for Love' on the radio.

IIRC they decided early on that their target audience were more interested in the bigger productions than solitary singles.

It is a while since I read the bookthough, so my memory may be a bit clouded.. .. ..

There's so much manipulation of the "sound" for radio that it's pretty much useless for anything other than a cursory review of music.

I'm talking about the "popular" radio stations here where the name is special edits, mucho compression etc etc.

Keane are probably my favourite band at the moment, and this is their best song ever in my opinion. It's such a shame to see the lyrics curtailed. They're also very atheist - I wonder if they've been censored?...

Doubt it's any kind conspiracy theory, it's just like JustinP1 said; short attention spans of modern listeners and the demands to get the next caller on the line mean that >3 min songs are an indulgence.

yes You're probably right. It just seems odd to alter the actual lyrics themselves, rather than just cutting out sections or dropping a verse here and there.

Its a chart requirement to have a sub 4 minute version on the single.

No radio edit, no chart inclusion.

Pisses me right off!

Where is the room for anybody trying to break the mold?

According to Wiki, Pink Floyd's DSOTM is the fifth best selling album ever, the best seller is Thriller, which was chock full of killer singles.

Most of the best selling albums on the list are by singles bands.

I miss the days when bands made singles that weren't included on their albums. Joy Division and then New Order were masters at this, a great singles band that also made great albums.
