I love Porcupine Tree, Radiohead etc and Pink Floyd from the 'olden days' but I want to expand my horizons in the same genre. I've heard the names Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Sigur Ros, Mars Volta etc so what are the most accessable album from these, or similar bands.

The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute

Sigur Ros - Takk..., Hvarf-Heim

If you say you like Porcupine Tree etc, could check out 65daysofstatic, Russian Circles et alsmile

Would dream theater fit in this category?

Cheers - I like oceansize already but prefer Everyone into Position to Frames. They were really disappointing live!

I always find Dream Theater too self-indulgent - They're like 4 virtuoso musicians in one band all trying to out perform each other. Thanks for the tip anyway.

Pure Reason Revolution - very Floyd influenced, but pretty good.

Oceansize I love, Frames is immense. I'd love to find more like them (I don't like most 'metal' vocals) - There's a band called Amplifier they are often compared to but they are more traditional.

Yeah I've heard PRR and like them too. Other bands in the same genre I listen to are...

Pineapple Thief - First 3-4 albums were good, don't like the later ones to much.
Riverside - Polish prog rockers

I'll probably edit this thread when i think of some others.

If you don't mind a smattering of melodic death metal with your prog then Opeth are worth a gander. I'd work backwards through their back catalogue from their latest (Watershed).

Only have one of their albums but Blackwater Park is brilliant - I just need to be in the mood for it as I am not into metal that heavy!

I dont know what Neo-Prog is tbh, however I am a BIG Dream Theater fan, so I dont know if this is what you are looking for or not.

Ps, just googled it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo-progressive_rock and I dont really think DT fits the bill I am afraid but Opeth may be more your way if its not too heavy.

Well it looks like I don't even know myself - I thought neo-prog was simply new music in a prog style, but all this new prog / neo prog is confusing.

I like the Opeth Damnation album, but the growling vocals on the other albums turn me off.

Another kind of neo prog album which has been getting rave reviews is the new Cynic album 'Traced In Air' prog/death with less growling!

Opeth are awesome, in my opinion the greatest band on the planet, due to the fact they can play almost any genre, apart from classical, to near perfection. You should try their album Damnation , if you don't like heavy stuff, as it is simply beautiful.

Also, Symphony X are top quality prog-metal, and have a lot of neo-classical infuences and scores throughout the music, some of which is truly epic.

For Isis I'd go for Panopticon or Oceanic, for Pelican probably Australasia and for Red Sparrowes, start with At The Soundless Dawn. I'd also recommend, if you haven't already to get some Neurosis as they influenced all the above bands, start with A Sun That Never Sets or The Eye Of Every Storm. Their best (If I really have to choose) is Through Silver In Blood but I would ease yourself in with the two aforementioned albums before listening to these '12 minute lessons in dynamics, aethetics, spirituality and catharsis.' (stolen from an Amazon review but I can't think of a more apt description!)

Can't argue with those recommends. thumbup

Neurosis, I think, are a few steps too far towards the dark side, but great stuff all the same. smile

For Isis as stated before Panopticon is superb, their latest album, 'In the absence of truth' is also great, but more modern.

Pelican definatley Australasia or The fire in our throats will beckon the thaw, City of Echoes is their most recent.
