I have developed an addiction to this track, I love it. The question is, does Brandon sing "or a re we dancer?" like it sounds, or, as documented on many lyric sites "or are we denser?".

It certainly sounds like dancer to me but does anyone have an idea as to what the song is all about?

It is are we dancer. Some reference to a quote.
Brandon Flowers said it was based on the quote "America is raising a generation of dancers."
By using the word dancer instead of dancers he's using it (improperly, due to poetic license) as an adjective the same reason that he uses "human" as opposed to "humans."
The idea of the song is are we human (alive, living, choosing) or are we dancer (following a routine)

"He says the lyrics were inspired by a disparaging comment made by Hunter S. Thompson about how America was raising a generation of dancers. But the song also had some help from album producer Stuart Price (aka Jacques LuCont), known for his work with Madonna and Missy Elliot, and who'd previously remixed 'Mr. Brightside.'"
