Question about iPod from a novice

I'm trying to move forward with my music listening options. I have a DAB CD HiFi with iPod dock and so I decided it was time for me to acquire an iPod. Having studied I find myself more and more confused.

I was going to get the new 16gig iPod Nano but I understand these are often incompatible with HiFi remotes even when the HiFi instructions tell you otherwise.

I also understand that the Nano doesn't charge from a doc.

Is this right?

If so then what's the next best option? I looked at the 120gig Classic and that seems to fit the bill. Is there anything I should be aware of or is there another option I should look at.
