Just finished watching Revolver, where Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata' was used as the final piece of music. I must be getting old, but I thought it was superb, very sombre, but superb nonetheless.

Can anyone recommend me a taster album along similiar lines, perhaps something with a little bit of everything in it, like an introduction to classical music if there is such a thing?

Much appreciated.

Nice choice mate, im only 28 but think the moonlight sonata is an awesome piece of music, im in the army and obviously have a will and after having lost mates, ive thought about funeral stuff, moonlight sonata is the only sombre piece im going to have. Anything like this is a good start to find your way I guess, im no expert either though !!

What was that song that was played throughout "In Bruges"?

Adagio for strings - Barber
Canon in D - Pachelbel
Almost anything by J. S. Bach (try the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor).

To go a bit further back in time, if you want some real "shiver up the spine" stuff, try

Spem In Alium - Thomas Tallis
Misere - Allegri
Missa Papa Marcelli - Palestrina

I'm sure if you did a search on here, there would be quite a few threads recommending classical stuff. Another thing is what style you fancy (soothing or rousing)?

If it's any help, below are some selections on me 'pod:

Chopin: Piano Concerto No.1
Bruch: Violin Concerto No.1
Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture
Verdi: The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves (from the opera Nabucco)
Chopin: Nocturne No.1 in B Flat Minor
Butterworth: On The Banks of Green Willow
Vaughan-Williams: Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis
Chopin: Berceuse in D Flat Major

Other good 'uns - IMVHO:

Beethoven: Symphony No.6 "Pastoral"
Mahler: Symphony No.5
Bach: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
Dvorak: Serenade for Strings
Grieg: Piano Concerto in A Minor
Elgar: Cello Concerto

A great one for "hooning" to is Mars: The Bringer of War from The Planets Suite by Holst yes

Just a taster for you.
