What music is this????
Discussion
There is a series of documentaries of a Risqué nature on Virgin 1 channel on Sky, Sunday nights at 9pm (repeated Thursday nights at 9pm ).
It's been on for about 3 or 4 weeks now and starts with a rousing piece of "Classical" music which is reprised at the start and finish of its commercial breaks . The music is in the veign of last night at the proms type stuff with mass violins.
My question is What is that music? It's driving me mad trying to remember what it is and where I've heard before?
Any one know what it is?? I keep watching it to see if I can recognise the music?

Believe it or not, it doesn't have a particular series tiltle title.
It is more a series of individual one hour documentaries each with a subject which broadly align to a general theme.
The next one for example is "Crade Snatcher and Proud". It's on Thursday 9pm Virgin 1 channel, Sky.
One was "Kinky and Proud" and another "Sex Maniac and Proud"
You'll begin to see the common thread here. Ahem...<cough>!!
Answer : PROUD. Pride in what you do???? What did you think the common theme was? Tsk! Tsk!

The music is the overture to Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner.

When it comes to "big strings", I always think Elgar or Vaughan-Williams. I forgot that if anyone can coax the best out of the string section, it's von Karajan no matter which composer's work he was conducting.

I have a recording of this with Claudio Abbado conducting the Berlin Phil that is fantastic. I don't know that I would describe this as a big strings piece specifically - there is so much else going on as well. Epic brass writing though. When it comes to "big strings", I always think Elgar or Vaughan-Williams. Yeah, I know what you mean. It's just that the OP mentioned "mass violins" and I immediately thought either the Thomas Tallis Fantasia or the Prelude to Act I of Lohengrin. I thought of the right composer but wrong opera.
Also, I'm in agreement with Abbado being the better director of the Berlin Phil. Karajan's recordings seem more........dictatorial? Not allowing the music the breathe?
