Do you have a favourite band that elicits a mark & lard style Whhhoooooo????? whenever you mention them?
Used to be Porcupine Tree for me but now more and more people are aware of them so I give you...
The Pineapple Thief - A mix of prog and bittersweet rock
Riverside - Polish neoprog with a funk bass
Pure Reason Revolution - Psychodelic rock
Blackfield - pop/rock from Israel's Aviv Geffen and Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson
I like LOADS of local bands who probably no-one on PH has heard of, but of all of them it would have to be:
Chunky Ate a Bee

Vini Reilly and The Durutti Column
Truly world class music, even name-checked by God in Twenty Four Hour Party People. But the only person I've ever met who actually owns any albums was the guy who turned me onto them, 25 years ago.
The Rainbow Remiped Dance Band
(who I have been told became Rip, Rig & Panic). I may own the only two surviving copies of their album

Barth. Sort of like Beck, Syd Barrat, Hint of Beatles.. If you like any of that stuff you'd probably enjoy Barth.

P,
Mother Earth - an english acid jazz band. Excellent musicians who were going between 1991-1998. The singer/lead guitarist, Matt Deighton, filled in guitar for Oasis on a tour a few years ago. I put a topic on here before about them and NO-ONE replied
Even youtube dont have anything on them but they had 4 or 5 albums. Better than Jamiroquai (who i love btw)

I first heard the group Chicken Shack about 20 years ago (the album was called "OK Ken"), and included her from Fleetwood Mac on the keyboard - before she joined the 'Mac. They were very much in the style of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, but more laid back; more tongue in cheek. Stan Webb is still going (of sorts):

I can't find a decent link to another 1970's group Camel, but I've always liked their trippiness.
Also 'tube Arthur Ebeling. A Dutchman who sings the blues.

My list, with all new clicky links!
Crowforce: One album, one single, thank you and good night.
System 7: Releasing albums faster than I can buy them on eMusic! Space guitar for the win!
Jesu: Vaguely reminiscent of a grindingly heavy but utterly emotional My Bloody Valentine.
Mordred: Funk thrash metal avec scratching und rapping. Better than the Chili Peppers.
OTT: See, the fact that there's nothing in Somerset to do other than shrooms and make music is a good thing. OTT is the bloke who produced the likes of Hallucinogen and Shpongle.
Qntal: Imagine a slightly boppier Dead Can Dance (who should also be on my list). By jingo, Syra's got a good voice. Anyone who likes DcD or The Cocteau Twins should give them a go.
Senser: Rage Against The Machine could never be this cool.
(HiRich: +1 on The Durutti Column; you now know 2 other people who like them)
