Have you only just found him?
You are correct though, even if he has been around since the year dot, ive seen him 2 times once with Dire Straights the second time withTraveling Wilburys Notting Hilbillies
Both sessions were outstanding
Nope, knew of him, just forgot for awhile. Most let his less than spectacular singing block their view of his real talent....the guitar. Letting Sir Tom handle the singing is a good move IMO.You are correct though, even if he has been around since the year dot, ive seen him 2 times once with Dire Straights the second time with

Recently rediscovered the immense wonder of period Vai in association with ex Rainbow frontman, Graham Bonnet & hirsute friends (aka Alcatrazz) in an early 80s vidjo which had me weeping with 'period' joy ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N19Pu1KM3b4
MK is terrific.
This guy only uses 3 strings....

Vai is probably the best out there, some of the stuff he does with a guitar- well.... say no more.
So, you reckon Stevie Vai is the best do you? Turn your eyes to this:

It's a live Frank Zappa track, appropriately called 'Stevie's Spanking'. It shows the genius that was Frank out playing Stevie Vai on stage with Vai in rapt attendance.
It's also an amazing 10 minute free form riff by the man who was truly the greatest guitarist that ever lived.
Frank, may you rest in peace mate.
Delta , you can also find and interview on You Tube with Stevie Vai (who is a great guitarist I agree) in which he describes in tones of complete awe, his audition with Zappa to get in to The Mothers
Some of Albert Lee's inspirations:
Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins:

Merle Travis:

Then you have to check out Larry Collins, Joe Maphis, (together here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36ZQfVIVkH0 and Larry was only 10 years old), Junior Barnard (with Bob Wills - almost the first use of a distorted sound), Charlie Christian, Django etc and that gets you to the '50s.
Then Deke Dickerson, Jussi (AKA Lester Peabody) playing his Bigsby steel in this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D027ZjSvmFc, TK Smith and so on
