What Era do you prefer

1967 - 1975 with peter gabriel on vocals,
or
1975 onwards with Phil Collins on vocals

I personally preffer the Peter Gabriel era some pretty epic albums, Foxtrot and Nursery Chryme being my favorite ones.

My tastes bridge both the Gabriel and Collins eras.

Genesis 1972 - 1982 was their best period during which time they were and remain, untouchable. bow

Thank you very much. beer

Having done a lot with my life, touring with Genesis will always remain a
highlight for me and this is the perfect blend of the two eras. yes

Gabriel era for me, too. Great songwriting, backed up by great musicianship. Trespass is a really chilled out album, generally, and I love it (Stagnation, Dusk, and The Knife are highlights although I prefer the live version of Knife).

Have had Selling England by the pound on a lot over the last week. Fabulous biggrin.

That live version of Firth of Fifth linked above is missing the piano intro frown

Difficult one this. On one hand I much prefer the songs from the Gabriel era, but still prefer post Gabriel versions of Suppers Ready and Cinema Show, musicaly they just seem to have a softer more melodic feel to them.

Back in 1977 when I first saw them, I only had Wind & Wuthering, so was totally
blown away at the Earls Court show and rushed out the next day looking for the
albums with Supper's Ready, Lamb Lies Down, Carpet Crawlers, Fifth Of Fifth etc etc

Getting home with the albums, I skipped right to Supper's Ready and remember
being bitterly disappointed with the album version - it sounded so flat and plodding
compared to what I had heard the night before. frown

Same went for the other tracks, although in time, I grew to love both versions and
accepted that they were from different periods in their career, but my preference
was and remains, for Collins singing Gabriel era tracks.

I was so fortunate that in 1982, on one of the tours that I worked with them, they
played Supper's Ready night after night with Collins giving it his all as we worked
our way around some great venues in America.

Berkeley Greek Theatre, CA on a hot summer's night, over looking the Bay Harbour
and Golden Gate Bridge behind the stage with Supper's Ready echoing around the
hillside remains a stunning visual and thankfully, audio memory, it really doesn't
get any better than that.

Sir I salute you!!! but I'm still dead jealous.

On another note, I remember hearing a mates tape of a knebworth gig from the radio with a Collins version of Selling England. Anyone know where I can get hold of a copy? would be 81-82ish

I spent most of my college years listening to Genesis, which would have been late 80's so "Invisible Touch" would have been just released. I enjoyed all their stuff, to be honest, and their stuff will always have a special place in my heart.

"Fountain of Salmacis" with the bass turned up on a decent hi-fi always gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing up and my tummy going a bit funny. Maybe there is "brown noise" in there? hehe

And I agree, Selling England is a gorgeous album - love it. yes

Genesis played Knebworth in 1978 & 1992, both were broadcast (radio in 78, but not all the show & SKY TV in 92)

If you need to know the set lists, let me know and I'll dig them out.

I'm sure I have a double CD of Knebworth '92 somewhere - I doubt the whole Genesis set is on it but there should be some.

Perhaps you can find a copy on eBay or something?

I reckon you will find it there too
