Hello there.

I bought a guitar today from a mate, he has had it for a few years and was given it by an ex'es dad. Not sure how old it is but it is an acoustic washburn and seems like a quality piece of kit. I plan to give playing a go, and maybe a few lessons as well as trying to self teach. I paid £60 for it, seems cheap but I wanted to know a bit more about it, model etc.

Don't actually care about the value as I am sure its a good quality guitar.

Wahburn's ok, £60's not bad, and it looks nice. Now you just have to work out how to play it...

I know moving the metal wires makes noises, apart from that I am stumped so far.

Grow your fingers long. Reaaaaaalllly long.

Do a youtube search on Jimi Hendrix or Tom Morello pt1 or Paul Weller or just about any good guitarist, and look at the length of their fingers...

Not my first guitar but haven't had one since I was 9. I have a few books in a cupboard at work so will dig them out tomorrow and annoy the OH all weekend.

For examples of how long fingers aid guitar playing see any vid of Steve Vai or Al Di Meola.....

Don't worry if your fingers aren't like Vai's-Segovia had tiny fingers and was one of the best guitarists ever.
Correct left hand positioning makes up for lack of finger length or hand shape-just look at Doug Aldrich from Whitesnake,

Make sure the action is at a good level and it might need new strings. If so get it down to a good music store for them to give it a service.

Plenty of instructional vids on youtube. Good luck and enjoy.
