Has Free Bird ever been bettered? Every time I listen to it I struggle to think of anything better. 9 minutes and 10 seconds of perfection.

It probably is.

I really like Simple Man and Tuesdays Gone too, but they are dirt compared to Free Bird. No surprise they (almost?) always played out with it.

Big LS fan, but I absolutely HATE Free Bird.

Comin' Home and Tuesday's Gone are far superior tracks in my humble opinion.

Freebird is a fantastic song, but the best ever? Songs are very personal things depending on emotions, memories, situations etc I have a list of songs which I consider the best ever, each one to cover a certain moment. Although Freebird is on the list.

Absolutely great song but if it's 10 minute epics you want, Jungleland by Springsteen is hard to beat.

Agreed, Tuesday's Gone is a better rock anthem - has it all!

I'm sure I read once that LS were playing Free Bird as an encore and just played and played until they had been going about an hour and then they would take it in turns to leave the stage for "refreshments" while the other kept playing. This went on for hours until the Police tried to raid the stage at which point the crowd were threating to riot, so the police backed down and LS continued for several hours more, just jamming around the riff and coming together for chorus's from time to time.

Agree re Jungleland. The best track on Born to Run by miles. I'd also shout up for Shine on you Crazy Diamond and Working Man by Rush. Free Bird is just hitting the mark for me at the moment.

I think it's an awesome track, but the best rock song ever? No.

The usual epics spring to mind - Stairway (we're not worthy bow), November Rain, Fade to Black etc.

YES! yes

Also Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin (especially the bit following on from when Plant sings 'and as we wind on down that road'). Throw in Achilles' Last Stand as well.

Velveteen by Transvision Vamp is another good'un, especially that riff that kicks in after Wendy James sings 'I remember, remember true'.

Can't forget some of Metallica's instrumental epics too - The Call Of Ktulu and Orion being the stand-outs.

I also quite like Prisoner Of Your Eyes by Judas Priest, even though it's far from being their best song.

If you want epics, early RUSH always springs to mind, just love Working Man but also Xanadu, Cygnus X1, La Villa Strangiato and the classic 2112.

Sweet Child of Mine I would deem far superior to November Rain.

Stairway is good and entered into some kind of musical lore ... but I've never thought it great as a rock song. It's a load of gibberish with an insanely great riff right at the end. I expect to be stoned for that, but I shall wear my steel undercrackers to that women may mate with me after I am dead to carry on my legacy.

heheI stand by what I said on the other thread, 'Because the Night' was the highlight of the show for me. I still love Jungleland - as well as Thunder Road - there's something about his lyrics that really allow you to paint a mental picture of the scene.

Re: Free Bird. I do enjoy it, and rank the solo as one of my favourites (though not number 1, but fairly high up the list). The problem is that calling any song "the best ever" is far too subjective, there will always be somebody else with a different suggestion. For example, everybody else in the whole world (apparently) seems to love Bohemian Rhapsody, but I think it's the musical equivilent of dental surgery without anaesthetic.

It's OK, but there are hundreds of better songs.

Most of Led Zeppelin's oeuvre for instance.

This could rumble on for ages and pages, as in taste terms there's no definitive right and wrong.

"Freebird" is good, but I'd rather listen to "The Apes of Wrath" by GWAR, thank you very much.

Thats what makes it fun though.

For quite a long time The Musical Box by Genesis was my favourite epic song and i still love it but I doubt it would figure on many peoples lists.

I don't know about best rock song ever, but it certainly is up there.

Last instrumental part is epic without a doubt.
