Can anyone tell me what I would need to get started in order to mix and cut together various tunes ala mash-up style.

I hear people do it off their laptops but I really don't know how, or which software/tools they use.
I am only asking this as a source of fun, I don't want to start releasing things onto youtube or Myspace, I just think it would be fun to try and make up some mini-mixes or mashups.

As an example I heard The Ting-Tings do a mini-mix recently on Raido 1 and I thought it was pretty good - then I heard Moyles describing how he spent the aftenroon at home trying to mashup some tunes on his laptop to play at the One Big Weekend a few weeks ago.

Any thoughts?

ACID would allow you to do it.

To get it to the level of someone like GHP however is a proper musical art form

Thanks! I know I won't get to any level worthy of note but thought it might be a bit of a hobby I could have a bash at.

Ableton Live would let you do it too, although life is much easier if you've got access to the different tracks that make up a song.
I know the Chemical Brothers often release the various elements so other folk can have a bash at remixing their tunes, but I'm not sure how common it is with your common or garden chart tune.

Get yourself some 1210s and do it properly!

Recent discoveries you could try, Japan's 'Life in Tokyo' over a decent funky house bassline and Dusty Springfield's 'Son of a preacher man' with a bit of drum n bass.

I have a pair of SL1200 Mk2's but you can't remix live, just overplay 2 records!
