I've be told they may be my cup of tea. So what essential albums should I be looking out for?

And if that floats your boat, then try Audioslave.

Same folks but new vocalist.

eta- what DID happen to Zack De La Rocha ?

Awsome band when they came out - never forget the first time I heard Killing In The Name & when they did Bullet in the Head on a BBC show called "No Nirvana" - intense. Saw them at Brixton first time they played a big show in London - drummer had his back to the crowd - still one of the best shows I've ever been to.

IMO started to lose their way after the first record but there are some decent tracks on the third one, The Battle of Los Angeles.

Also check out other '90's LA bands like Union 13, Downset & the masters Suicidal Tendencies bow

They've reformed and are touring, playing Leeds and Reading in August, as said; every song on their first album is great, the best one, in my opinion, is Know Your Enemy.

There's also:
Killing in the Name,
Wake Up,
Ashes in the Fall,
Sleep Now in the Fire,
Maggie's Farm (cover),
Testify,
Calm Like a Bomb,
The Ghost of Tom Joad (cover),
Bullet in the Head,
Bulls on Parade,
Vietnow,
How I Could Just Kill a Man (cover)...

They're a few of my favourites.

Yup. That one. "Killing in The Name" and "Bullet in the Head" are probably the best known, though I'd plump for "Know Your Enemy", myself.

Someone has mentioned Audioslave. This was much more melodic than RATM and there were no politics involved. All the musicians from RATM, but with Chris Cornell (ex-Soundgarden) on vocals. They produced 3 very good albums.

Shame they split, really.

As has been said, the first album is the one to get, the others aren't nearly as good.

Rage Against The Machine are an incredible band and should have been far bigger than they were! I can't remember what tv show it was (may have been Whistle Test?) but I was blown away by their performance at a time when Nirvana seemed to have arrived on the scene as the next big thing - this is in another league! As said the first album is all killer, no filler! However there is some amazing stuff on Evil Empire, The Battle Of Los Angeles and Renegades, such as People of The Sun, Bulls on Parade, Testify, Guerilla Radio and on and on! The only other person I have seen deliver their vocals with such "rage" and passion as Zack le Rocha is Chuck D of Public Enemy and the two bands have made no secret of their respect for each other over the years. Tom Morello is a wizard on the guitar and the band are as tight as can be. Brilliant!

Get the Battle of LA very soon afterwards, almost as good as their debut. Was never very impressed with Evil Empire, but otherz seem to like it

they're albums are all good IMO, Evil Empire and Battle of LA are my faves, both are cracking genre busting albums IMO (as rightly stated is the debut, but theres a wider range of sounds in the later stuff, Tom Morello's a guitar genius IMO!)
this track still does it for me!,

Audioslave are cool too, the last "Revelations" album was the best IMO

Saw RATM at Reading in 93 - am trying desperatly to get fund together for a day ticket for this year. They along with The Prodigy and Pendulem are the best live acts I have ever seen.

Crowd surfing to Killing in the Name of - dangerous but fun!

Best band of the 90s without a doubt. Their first album is still absolutely incredible.

4th not really worth the time, shame they went out with a whimper instead of a bang...although as they are touring again possibly they might start writing again.

BOLA is decent, probably better than Evil Empire imo. Good tracks to be found on both though.
