As this forum is a great way of finding awesome tracks a PHer might have missed during his music-loving career, I thought I'd mention what I consider as traditional 'heavy metal'. Not thrash, speed, grunge, death, goth, glam or any other sub-section of the genre (not that there's anything wrong with these, I hasten to add!), but traditional hard rock at it's best. The sort of music that has you involuntarily reaching for the air guitar whilst striking a mad wide-legged axeman stance, and makes you nod your head like a broken parcel-shelf ornament on a very bumpy road. There's a hugely long list in my collection, but some that deserve a mention:

  • Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne (Randy Rhoads on guitar - hell yes!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hwq3nNHyPI
  • And The Bands Played On - Saxon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYHe-igERv8
  • Breaking The Law - Judas Priest
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYn5hxeFt10
  • Since You've Been Gone - Rainbow
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3ont_ub2S4&feature=related
  • Whole Lotta Love - you know who!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN-_up5dSW0
  • Dr Rock - Motorhead ("We are Motorhead. We play rock 'n' roll." Yes, Lemmy. Yes you do.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shhERq5abHI

Tell me yours. If there's any new 'uns for me - I'll hunt them down and by God, I'll rock to them!!

Cos if I tried to mention them all, I'd be typing all day and my fingers would be worn to bloody stumps! (Although clearly I should have mentioned AC/DC as masters of the genre....).

Deep purple - Highway Star

An early example of metal - although things got heavier a few eyars after.

Fantastic anthemic rock!

Every time I hear it, it takes me back to being a teenager with a leather jacket and too much hair and makes me think of going to rock gigs at a venue I can't remember the name of, near Buckley in N.Wales. Top times.

A bit prog but Uriah Heep are very good

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wgOz8iweLc&fea...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGKlaW_IFZs&fea...

Scorpions - Rock You Like a Hurricane
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB8HudfbaTE

Couple of Quiet Riot numbers - Metal Health and Cum On feel The Noize
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3oeGwq9Qy0&fea...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b0MjRQTUSw&fea...

Motley Crue - Girls, Girls, Girls and Shout At The Devil
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJrSyFpK3iQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJRkdYreV1w&fea...

Pretty much anything from AC/DC, Black Sabbath (Ozzy and Dio), Iron Maiden and Guns'n'Roses goes without saying.

My boss went to see many bands in the 70's, but he said that Uriah Heep were louder than just about everyone else (except Budgie apparently)
