Sepultura's 1989 album, Beneath The Remains is still, in my opinion, the apotheosis of the form. Slayer's Reign In Blood comes a close second, docked a few marks for excessive cheese.

Bay Area thrash was always good - Dark Angel, Forbidden, Exodus and so on. Exodus's Fabulous Disaster is a brilliant album, and that cover of War's Low Rider is perfectly judged.

And, to be picky about it, Anthrax and Megadeth were more speed metal than thrash. And so were Forbidden, thinking about it.

ETA videos. The stage diving on the Exodus one must be seen to be believed

Thrash has always been one of my favourite genres, these revival bands are great fun but to me most of them just sound like stuff that came out the first time. I guess it's great for younger guys lwho never heard the original bands, if you listen to stuff like Acid Reign, Razor, Annihilator, Kreator, DRI and Hirax to name a few and you'll hear where a lot of the new stuff gets it's sound from. I tend to listen to more black metal and avant garde stuff these days.

I love Thrash smile Just cannot get enough of it, and constantly discovering old thrash bands i unfortunately missed at the time.

For me, the seminal thrash metal album of all time has to be Sabbat, History of a Time To Come.

Over all time faves include -

Anacrusis - Manic Impressions
Sabbat - Dreamweaver
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
Sepultura - Beneath The Remains
Megadeth - Peace Sells and So For So Good.....
Annihilator - Alice In Hell
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Anthrax - State Of Euphoria
Death - Symbolic
Death Angel - Act III and The Ultraviolence

There are so many more........

Yes and Yes. More into Black Metal now though.
My first ever gig was Suicidal Tendencies supported by M.O.D.. my fav thrash band is still Testament but my fav album is Sabbat Dreamweaver.

In fact I think I'll change the car CD collection for the commute home!

Well, I've just spent a very happy hour on YouTube, re-acquainting myself with Sabbat and Skyclad. They certainly don't make it like that any more.

Good times!

The original Sabbat Lineup (minus just the bass player i think) have recently reformed and put on a few gigs. No intention to release any more albums though.

Andy Sneap has to be one if not the best guitarist of the genre, and sadly overlooked at the time

He really gave Megadeth a good thrash sound again, hope they work together again !!!

He did indeed. They all stayed at the farm (where Andy's studio is) and Andy's dad was telling me of their surprise that Dave is deeply serious about going to church on Sundays. smile

Epic examples, Sir!

VDP, not only has - IMHO - bestest riffs, but excellent lyrics. Consider:-

"Got sh!t on, p!ssed on, spit on, stepped on, f!!cked with, and pointed at by lesser men"

I've always loved that line!

Will do. smile

I think he did a couple of theirs, "The More Things Change" and "Burn My Eyes".

By strange coincidence, another mate of mine used to be Machine Head's guitar tech. smile

I always thought Testament were pretty good too fromm same area.

e.x.e. - Stricken by Might - they were supposed to be the next big thing way back when. great album if slightly sick in places.

UK Thrash Look no further than History of a time to Come by Sabbat. definitive.

Saw them at Hard Rock Hell - but annoyingly their set was moved forward due to a band cancelling, so missed first half of the gig.

still great though
testament's Practice What You Preach is definitely a mujst have album of the era, and The Ballad has to be one of my all time favourite songs.

Another seminal thrash band for me, who crossed some boundaries for the time, was Mordred. Check out 'In This Life' and the song Falling Away in particular.

Commander? - Megadeth speed? Not so sure about that one, but this is always one of those debates that can go on forever. I never really got the grasp of who was speed and who was not, but if i had to, i would say someone like Rage probably fell into that category, and i think the black metal stuff took over the Speed throne. Anyhow, Speed was but a subset of Thrash, so technically we could refer to such bands as either. Either way, it was good music and good times smile

I always thought of speed metal as being cleaner, more technical and precise, and somewhat less organic, than thrash - hence my perception of Megadeth and Forbidden as being speed metal.

It's all in the ear of the beholder!

I've got Fool's Game, In This Life and the Vision EP by Mordred. My favourite song is "Esse Quam Videri", because it's so ineffably, enthusiastically and irrepressibly bouncy.
