The rubbery bit around the cone on my Dad's HB1s have failed quite spectacularly; and the tweeters don't sound too good either. I know they were reasonable speakers in their day, but is it likely to be worth replacing the units within the speakers, if indeed one still can? Alternatively what second hand speakers would you recommend for up to £100?

Any Second hand speakers up to £100 are not going to be as good as the Heybrooks. Contact the company direct to see if they either carry the "old" drivers or have a recommended repair specialist.

I think there would be plenty of better 2nd hand kit about for £100.
At the end of the day the HB1 was a budget speaker and though alright must be near 20 years old now.
Have a browse on eBay, bought a pair of Rega EL8s a while back for £18 which i would rate well above the Heybrooks. Anything by Royd would also be excellent though getting very rare now.

If you realy want to fix the Heybrook take out the blown units and have a look for the make and part number on the drive unit and google it. Not sure who made the drive units but almost certainly they would have been generic drivers.

A quick search on eBay found these:

Collect only though.

These awesome speakers, but need a very good amp to drive them so no good with a cheapo one.

My friend recently replaced his HB1 cones for the same reason. Originally he auditioned speakers up to £200 but could not find any tat sounded as good as the HB1s for his budget.

He contacted Heybrook and they put him in touch with an independent supplier...
