Marillion - post Fish
Discussion
I'm a big Marillion fan, and have all their albums etc - but all pre the departure of Fish. Thinking I may be missing out on something here I should probably get amongst their later releases, but where to start? Any particular gems I should look out for, or just go chronologically?
Not a subject of eart-shattering consequence, but I'm VERY bored at work and thought I'd pick the PH Music brain.....

What you should have written was : I've got all of the first four Marillion studio albums and a couple of live ones, but haven't bought any of the subsequent ten studio albums, a further three live ones, any one of 30-odd Racket Record releases, any of the dozen or so DVD's or, indeed, any of the 40+ 'Front Row' releases from the last 20 years. Despite this, I am a big fan.Not a subject of eart-shattering consequence, but I'm VERY bored at work and thought I'd pick the PH Music brain.....
Try Brave from late last century. Marbles from this millenium is good as well. HTH.
I'm also a big Marillion fan, but I'll have to disagree - Brave was one of the more difficult Hogarth-era albums, I found. I love it now, but I had to listen to it 'loud with the lights off' a few times when it came out to fully appreciate it.
Personally, I'd start with Somewhere Else and if you like it... work backwards from there.

Start with Marbles. - Buy the 2 disk version (not the 1 disk)- get a bottle of wine, your favourite take away, have the lights off or very low and just sit down and listen. This is how I first listened to that album and I was blown away.
You could also do the same with Brave but thats a bit heavier going.
Personally I haven't connected with the latest album (Somewhere Else) so wouldn't recommend that but as always with music everybodies tastes are slightly different.
Enjoy, you have some awesome music to discover!!! (and a small amount of rubbish stuff too )

I agree with you, Marillion were greater than the sum of their parts, they were the best band in the world for me, still love every track they did with Fish.
Post Fish they've done some good tracks but I find them a bit hit n miss and mostly dull (although Marbles is very good), mostly love Fish's solo output but although he's never done a track I've disliked there are a few that don't really interest me (Field Of Crows for example is a bit bland)
Fish live though is always fantastic, couldn't have a better showman.

Marbles (This album is just epic, The Invisible Man, Neverland, Ocean Cloud, Fantastic Place and The Only Unforgivable Thing blow me away evertime I listen to them.)
Brave
Afraid of Sunlight
Anaraknophobia is also very good, This is the 21st Century being the stand out track on that.
Steer clear of Somewhere Else, the production is awful and nearly ruins the whole album, it's only saved by the title track which you can find here:

Beautiful song.
Cant wait for Happiness is the Road, seems like an age since I pre-ordered it!!!
I added up my marillion CD collection a while ago, it came to nearly 100 CDs, a bunch of Vinyls and some DVDs.

Never really could get into Marillion post Fish, just seem like a totally different band (and now rather weird, airy fairy, and very samey). Which is a pity really, coz I do really like the odd song (e.g. No One Can). Went to Music Live at the end of last year and picked up their sampler CD (signed by Rothery :-) ... being a sampler CD they'd picked about 8 songs presumably from lots of different albums ... listened to it once through, REALLY boring.
Fish post Marillion, album wise is not bad, again some good stuff and some so-so stuff. Live however he's pretty damn fantastic !

Once dismissed as a pretentious, Genesoidal facsimile, you replay the original stuff and delight in it's quirkiness.
I'm finding it increasingly hard to stop playing 'Forgotten Sons' in the car: the vocal is an instrument in it's own right; unique, of rare passion and profound ability, gold standard musical nectar.
It's too easy to dismiss the lyrical content as 6th form common room bluster and the musical contruction is of a level bettered by, er, well I'm not quite sure.
Afaic, Derek McFish & Co is/was the stuff of genius.

There are some brilliant live versions of Forgotten Sons!
And is Steve Rothery one of the most under-rated guitarists of all time??

Sorry he doesn't come close solo as when he was in the band or come close to the band as they are now IMHO. And I still keep trying his stuff (actually have 13th Star on the mp3 player at the moment) - it's OK but doesn't really work for me.
I've been listening to 13th Star over the weekend, and I have to say that I think it stands head and shoulders above anything he's done before. Circle Line & Dark Star are just superb (IMO). Best thing he's done since Clutching at Straws, I reckon. AdeTuono said:

Vigil (fabulous but let down by a poor production).
Credo (see above, the version of 'Just Good Friends' with Sam Brown is fantasic)
Sunsets (just fantastic, great production too, IMO his best).
Acoustic (lovely stuff, the version of Kayleigh far outstrips the original)
Raingods (epic last track, couple of 'fillers' though, 'Incomplete' is my fave here).
13th Star (probably his best yet).
Suits starts off well but I lose interest before it finishes, Mirror, Crows & Felini have never inspired, never been able to get through them in one sitting.
Favourite post-Fish Marillion for me is 'Seasons End' specifically 'Easter' which is IMO perfection.
Best album by any of them is Fugazi, can't fault it, never forget the first time I heard Assassing!

I've not got into 13th Star - I'll have to give it another listen.Gassing Station | Music | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
