Now this is a band that has always passed me by/mystified me over the years.
I am constantly reading about them/hearing them mentioned alongside other musicians as a reference point but have generally steered clear because I assumed (I know it's bad too until you actually experienced something..) they were just a bunch of fools lead by a crazy, drunken Pied Piper in a tasteless jumper. In short I didn't 'get' them or why they were still around/so revered.
However I have recently started to explore the world of post-punk and they have begun to pop into my horizons ever more frequently which usually takes to mean I should investigate further and expand said horizon.
Therefore I ask you to point a fool in the right direction of where to begin my decline into the murky, shouty world of The Fall. High point? Low point? Most accessible entry points?

Refresh my memory once again,
Wasn't he the singer that ended each sentence with a funny sound as he sang.
If so, Peely'. Either had a fiscal interest or an horrendous blind spot, not sure which, as he always raved about them.
Singer Ian something?
Mark E. Smith is their lead singer.Wasn't he the singer that ended each sentence with a funny sound as he sang.

I think Peely was rather fond of them...
Mark, yeah that sounds familliar actually,
Do you know what I'm getting at over the vocals though or is that someone I got mixed up.
JP certainly favoured them though.
Where I usually picked up on his little finds
Weather report/Slits/Steve miller band/Joni mitchell
(He was truly eclectic) I didn't 'get' some of the manc' scene
Fall were One such act...

Hi,
The Fall are an acquired taste, and not everybody gets them, I am a massive fan but my wife can't stand them.
Everybody has their favourite albums, mine are (not in any particular order) This Nations Saving Grace, Dragnet, and (controversially) Bend Sinister, but that is only because it was the first one I got and I now have two vinyl copies, one very thin for best and one for everyday. Other ones I am fond of are Live at the witch trials, Totales Turns, Hex Enduction Hour and Wonderful and Frightening World of....
None of these are very accessible, in fact accessible and the Fall do not make happy bed fellows, I suppose some of the early nineties stuff is a bit easier, if you had to push me though I would say either Wonderful and Frightening World or Extricate.
Some of the compilations (50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong or the Rough Trade Singles Collection) are quite good, especially for irritating your wife on long car journeys.
