I was just listening to F.E.A.R by Ian Brown and remembered how clever the song is with all the sentences spelling out Fear.

"For each a road
For everyman a religion
Find everybody and rule
For everything and rumble
Forget everything and remember
For everything a reason
Forgive everybody and remember"

I just wondered what other song lyrics you find clever / interesting.

I'm a Barbie girl in a Barbie world doesn't count I'm afraid!

Virtually any of the songs on Jimi Hendrix's second album (axis)
eg from Castles Made of Sand

A little indian brave before he was ten,
Played wargames in the woods with his indian friends
And he built up a dream that when he grew up
He would be a fearless warrior indian chief
Many moons past and more the dream grew strong until
Tomorrow he would sing his first warsong and fight his first battle
But something went wrong, surprise attack killed him in his sleep that night

I’ll never know what brought me here,
As if somebody led my hand,
It seems I hardly had to steer,
My course was planned.
And destiny it guides us all,
And by it’s hand we rise and fall,
But only for a moment,
Time enough to catch our breath again.

And we’re just another piece of the puzzle,
Just another part of the plan,
How one live touches the other
Is so hard to understand --
Still we walk this road together,
We try and go as far as we can,
And we have waited for this moment in time,
Ever since the world began.

Taking in the times gone by,
We wonder how it all began,
We’ll never know and still we
Try to understand,
And even though the seasons change,
The reasons shall remain the same,
It’s love that keeps us holding on
Till we can see the sun again.

And I stand alone, a man of stone,
Against the driving rain
And the night it’s got your number,
And the wind it cries your name
And we search for clues, win or lose,
In this we’re all the same
The hope still burns eternal,
We’re the keeper of the flame

"The point was fast, but it was too blunt to miss. Life handed us a paycheck and we said 'we worked harder than this!'"

One of my favourites, from Modest Mouse.

Always thought that was a great line

I dig my toes into the sand
The ocean looks like a thousand diamonds strewn across a blue blanket
I lean against the wind
Pretend that I am weightless
And in this moment I am happy...

Roger Waters wrote these lyrics about the money obsessed music mogals in the 70's. Following the success of Darkside of the Moon, the Floyd were under pressure to churn albums more quickly.

The thing is, Waters wrote these lyrics and the big wigs just didn't get it.

HAVE A CIGAR

Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar.
You're gonna go far, fly high,
You're never gonna die,
You're gonna make it if you try;
They're gonna love you.
Well I've always had a deep respect,
And I mean that most sincerely.
The band is just fantastic,
that is really what I think.
Oh by the way, which one's Pink?
And did we tell you the name of the game, boy,
We call it Riding the Gravy Train.

We're just knocked out.
We heard about the sell out.
You gotta get an album out.
You owe it to the people.
We're so happy we can hardly count.
Everybody else is just green,
Have you seen the chart?
It's a helluva start,
It could be made into a monster
If we all pull together as a team.
And did we tell you the name of the game, boy,
We call it Riding the Gravy Train.

Waters lyrics are utterly superb, totally cynical and to the point arent they.

For me there are too many to mention but most from Darkside though to The Final Cut are right on the money. (no pun intended).

Hendrix lyrics IMO are one of the most overlooked aspects of his talent.

Neal Peart has a way with words too...."Glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity" is a favorite of mine.

Anything by Kingmaker is superb, loz is an amazing lyricist.
Hey Birdman is one of my favourites:

I want some escape I wanna fly out of here
What's keeping me grounded is becoming clear
I was born with no special powers
But I could've been someone if I'd put in the hours
This small town is whittling away
My outward-bound ticket like I was its' enemy.

I walk down the high streets doesn't get me very high
It seems everybody looks at the floor and not up in the sky
Is there nowhere I can buy a cheap pair of wings
Take the weight off my feet. My mind off of things
This small change is getting me down
Where we're in the money baby, then we'll paint the town

Doo doo doo doo doo Hey Birdman

The wind's in my wings but the wax's in my eyes

I was so near to getting somewhere when it all slipped out of my fist
When it came down I had a choice And I'm not the type that can insist
This small town isn't so small That I can fly out Soar over its' walls
I climbed the tallest building to take my final flight
But when it came to jumping I was too scared of heights

Brother will kill brother
Spilling blood across the land
Killing for religion
Something I don't understand
Fools like me,who cross the sea
And come to foreign lands
Ask the sheep,for their beliefs
Do you kill on God's command?
A country that's divided
Surely will not stand

megadeth always goes down a treat!

I've been driving in my car, it's not quite a jaguar
I bought it in primrose hill from a bloke from brazil
It was made in fifty-nine in a factory by the tyne
It says morris on the door, the g.p.o. owned it before
I drive in it for my job, the governor calls me a slob
But I don't really care, give me some gas and the open air

It's a bit old but it's mine, I mend it in my spare time
Just last week I changed the oil, the rocker valves and the coil
Just last week I changed the oil
Last week it went round the clock, I also had a little knock
I dented somebody's fender, he learnt not to park on a bender, ha ha ha

I've been driving in my car, it don't look much but I've been far
I drive up to muswell hill, I've even been to selsey bill
I drove along the a45, I had her up to 58
This copper stopped me the other day, you're mistaken what could I say
The tyres were a little worn, they were o.k., I could have sworn
I like driving in my car, I'm satisfied I've got this far

I like driving in my car, it don't look much but I've been far
I like driving in my car, even with a flat tyre
I like driving in my car, it's not quite a jaguar
I like driving in my car, I'm satisfied I've got this far
