Right, I'm watching Portishead Live at Roseland and it's got me thinking, who was the first band/artist who don't normally perform with a string section to do so?

Kanye West did it with Late Orchestration a couple of years ago, to great effect, the Verve did it years ago on Jools Holland (if never anywhere else), but it pains me to think that Metallica might have been the first ones...

Does anybody know?
