From the thread about the cover of Teardrops, got me to thinking as to cover versions that are so truly horrendous you'd wonder who thought them up.

Absolute worst ones have to be Jessica Simpsons covers of Take My Breath Away (Berlin) and Angels (Robbie Williams). She just screams. Cannot sing. She may look easy on the eye, but that voice? Ewww!

DJ Sammy - boys of summer. Way to go to suck all the life from the song. The original is possibly one of the best tracks of the 80s.

Any girls aloud cover - Jump, I think we're alone now, Walk This way, and their cover of girls on film was also equally sickening.

But on the flip side, one of the most bizarre and excellent covers I've heard has been Cradle Of Filth doing Cliff Richards Devil Woman ....

William Shatner - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Interesting.

Duran Duran - 911 is a Joke. To be fair I haven't heard it; to be unfair, I don't want to.

I have somewhere on a compilation CD a cover by Jim Eldon of 'Dancing In The Dark' - recorded on fiddle.

It already sounds like a dubious concept, now imagine what it would be like if you got a particularly bad school orchestra to attempt to play the lyrics (that's right, the lyrics, not the melody) on the fiddle, while a bloke from a working man's club mumbles over the top.

It's one of those things where you find yourself asking whether it's a really terrible record, or a really terrible joke, or (as I suspect) both at once?

Giant Sand does a great (IMHO) cover of Iron Man, but it's distinctly odd.

Whoever did the cover of Breakfast in America that I keep throwing up to needs to be shot though. Awful.

I like Duran in their pomp, but I'm a leedle bit sceptical of romantic old-timers, now well into their drag queen period, attempting lyrics like:

Public Enemy said:
I call em body snatchers quick they come to fetch ya?
With an autopsy ambulance just to dissect ya
They are the kings cause they swing amputation
Lose your arms, your legs to them its compilation
I can prove it to you watch the rotation
It all adds up to a funky situation
So get up get, get get down
911 is a joke in yo town
Get up, get, get, get down
Late 911 wears the late crown

911 is a joke

I just think Duran Duran did more for interracial harmony when they were poncing about on boats and shooting half naked circus clowns out of cages.

"Blue" murdering Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours". With him in the video. He's blind but he ain't deaf so must have been paid handsomely for that stinker.

yes

I hold Sixpence Non The Richer's 'Here's Where the Story Ends' to be the most execrable. Superficially it's hardly any different from the Sunday's original, but she manages to sing just off-key enough to totally destroy it.

They also did a totally gutless rendition of "There she goes" by the La's.

They should have been put into a sack and thrown into Dawson's creek!

I reckon Madonna's version of American Pie is up there as one of the most ill conceived covers of all time.

Total censored.
