That'd be Newton Faulkner. I'm a fan of the original, but his cover is excellent.

Much prefer the Massive Attack original as I feel it's about more than just the lyrics and the singer's voice but one of those where the music and choice of instruments is just as powerful. I don't feel NF's cover has that power. It's like 'wall of sound' Righteous Brothers compared to Robson and Jerome!

It seems quite a few people have covered it this year, i'm sure i can remember 2 or 3 doing it on Jo Wileys live lounge.

Looking on the all knowing eye that is wikipedia it says this
Wikipedia said:
Mika , British singer did a live cover of the song for the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, however this is radically different from the original recording.

Incubus performs a cover of this song at their concerts.

The British band, Elbow, did a live cover of the song for the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, and a recorded version is also featured as a track on their CD, Not A Job.

The Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist Newton Faulkner covered the song on his album Hand Built By Robots. Faulkner's version charted at #60 on downloads in August 2007. It was released as an official single on 10 December 2007.

José González first covered the song on the Zane Lowe show on BBC Radio 1, and later the song appeared on his 2007 album In Our Nature.

This song was sampled for the track "Kneight Riduz Wuz Here" on Krayzie Bone's solo album Thug On Da Line, which was released August 28, 2001.

Is there a linky to this anywhere?

Not sure if I like the idea of 'Teardrop' being covered, the original was a brilliant tune, that was very powerful.

Though sometimes covers can be better than the original, I'm not sure if anybody else will agree but I actually prefer Limp Bizkit's version of 'Behind Blue Eyes' to the Who's original version.

I await the backlash for my final comment...

Newton Faulkner's version is very similar to Jose Gonzalez's interpretation and, IMHO, Jose's version is a lot better. I don't know why NF even bothered.

I too initially didn't like the thought of the song being covered, but it is because of the majesty of the Massive Attack original, and the fact that your brain uses it as a reference point, that the Jose version works so well.

Oh no, I'm turning into Patrick Bateman ; )

If you've only ever heard the Faulkner version on the radio, you'll have missed out on the EPIC levels of bass than underpin the song from a couple of minutes in; it really has to be heard to be believed and lends an incredible majesty to his version. I also like the 'honesty' of it - the original cover started out as an 'acoustic-only' song in one of his sets and snowballed from there. He recreates the drum rhythm butting the heel of his hand against the body of the guitar.

It's different, but I like it! smile

I haven't heard their cover of Behind Blue Eyes, but they did a great job with George Michael's Faith!

It's the only decent thing they ever did - I never thought a Speak and Spell could convey emotion - well, it did a more effective job of it than that Durst twunt, anyway!

Teardrop by Newton Faulkner 'live' is far better, as is any live song, it sounds pants on the album, when we heard it live it was just amazing, I find Newtons take on the song very very similar to the Elbow version.

I'm going to have to search this one out, I'm a big fan of the original (and some of massive attacks other work).

Sometimes covers can improve the original, but its relatively rare. The majority of covers that have been released over the last few years have been dire - absolute worst ones have to be Jessica Simpsons covers of Take My Breath Away and RWs Angels.

Personal fave cover has to be GnR doing Live'n'Let die. Absolutely awesome.
