Finally decided to take the plunge and actually turn my cd collection into brass before they become totally worthless.

Since getting my ipod, I just dont touch the things, they are sat there gathering dust.

That along with my 12 month old NAD cd player....

Feels really sad to see them going, even though I know Ive still got the tunes, it just feels......wrong.

Anyone else taken the plunge ?

No and i never will! The packaging is as much a part of the experience as the music itself. From ripping the plastic off to discovering something hidden in the inlay (such as on Kid A), the artwork and packaging are part of the joy of buying music!

I would still rather have the cd's gathering dust that buy any music from a download store - same price for an inferior product!!

Edited to add: got anything good listed? biggrin

So you've ripped all your CD's to the 'pod and are now selling them, isn't that piracy? biggrin

When the 'pod dies you'll wish you had all those CD's as a backup.

Given how rancid they sound and how a simple hardware failure can wipe out your entire collection (insurance will cover the cost of a new hard drive, not the data on it), not to mention all that DRM crap I'll be sticking to physical media for as long as possible.

An it will, trust me (am now on my second one)you will wish you had the originals, and also the sound is not as good (If I play a cd through my system and then play the ipod through the same system, its sounds somewhat 'thin')I love my ipod, I never travel without it, on planes (I do about 150 flights a year) and in the car (have a hard wired interface in the TVR)but sound wise its not a patch on the original CD

From a licensing point of view, don't you need to have the CDs?

IIRC - if you sell the CDs then you sell the right to keep a copy of them on your Ipod.

I must be a throwback. I like to "listen" to music. As for mobile music I can just about tolerate In-Car systems but find any Mobile system "weedy" and uninteresting. They ruin the experience!!. Also the music industry will allow you to use the cd's to create a collection on a mobile player IF you have the originals.

Given that Ive obviously got 3 different sources of back up, Im not concerned about losing the data.

As for the piracy thing........

None of you here have ever used Limewire at all then ?

I just thought Id turn something I dont ever use any more into hard cash before they become totally worthless and get given to charity shops.

Im no audiophile and am happy with what Ive got soundwise.

I do feel a bit sad to see some old friends go, but as I said, why keep something to gather dust if it can earn some dollar ?

I have used Limewire in teh past. I would never and could never sell my CDs, they dont fetch any amount of money so it seems a pointless task. Having said that I have not listened to a proper CD for months now, its all on computer.
I think I buy one CD a year, this years will be by a guy called Newton Faulkner, he is worth my tenner smile

I think you're mad, assuming they're stored as compressed crap (most people do) you're loosing the quality which having paid for a half decent CD player you'd think you like.

That and the fact I like having something real to show for my money and the process of playing real Albums.

No. For a start selling my CDs would be like selling the kids and secondly while I have ripped all my CDs to mp3 so I can listen to them on the bike when I'm at home I listen to my CDs (to have them there and to listen to the mp3 files would be the same as watching the tv from the garden through the window imo).

I don't know what limewire is.

Mmm, sounds just like me, but I got two this year the other being Amy Macdonald whose album is far better. Have forced myself to listen to NF now and as a result am trying to learn some the songs, as they are in isolation awesome. That guy can really play...

...g!t.

Getting somewhere with "Dream catch me" now. Ultimate guituar is invaluable! Did you know that song was written by Crispin Hunt of the Longpigs? Inlays are full intresting guff like that.

RE the OP: I totally agree with the responses on here.
The physical presentation of music by proper non-manufactured artists done by themselves is as much a part of the album as the tracks and to me worth the space it takes up on my shelf, so whatever the legal ins and outs of selling the original copies of recordings and retaining the data, I wouldn't do it myself.

My CDs - like my books, laptop, guitars etc - are all battered through use so worth naff -all to anyone else but me, and that's way I like them.

Good point there. Always make sure you rip onto your MP3 player with the highest (or CD) quality available - it's in the WMP settings menu somewhere. True, it uses more memory, but it's worth it

Im surprised by some of the responses here TBH, but, hey, its free a world.

I worked on the basis of the fact that I just NEVER actually used them anymore and would rather have the space in the house.

It has taken a long time to come to the decision to sell, I will admit, but having gone through the collection and realised just how many of my cd's are copies anyway, I stopped being nostalgic about them.

The times I actually get to just sit on the settee and just listen to tunes are very very rare and I listen to 96% of my music either in the car or sat in front of the pc.

Never heard of him til last wednesday, we had got tickets to the radio 2 o2indigo night, Amy mcdonald was standing in for mika, so we saw her that night too.
NF is more amazing to watch than the recorded stuff I have heard on the net this week, a truly talented chap, I've not heard the album yet.
He did play Bohemian Rhapsody last week (one man and a guitar!)

Here's my latest racking for 12" vinyl.

I'm fairly surprised as well... I can see totally where you're coming from.

If I ever sorted out some decent storage, backup capability and the time to rip them at a decent quality then I'd be tempted to get rid of my collection - maybe keep a few special/sentimental ones.
It would depend on how much I'd get though - if it was just for the sake of a pound or so I'd probably just stick them in the loft. My record collection is in the loft and I don't own a record player but that's another story.

Earlier this year I was buying up all of my old cassette collection on CD from ebay/amazon and had a rule that I wouldn't spend more than £1.50. I reckon I managed to get around 80% of my collection on CD as replacements for my tapes.

I didn't think anyone would buy tapes these days so threw the majority in the bin, annoyingly I then found that people were buying collections of tapes for some strange reason - so I sold the rest on ebay as a job-lot.

I have to say that I was very chuffed with my dosh for them - trash into cash - fleabay's founding principle.
