Bit of a long shot i know, but i have an old 1978 JMP 2203 head

now i got the thing about 2 years ago, and it works fine, but can get quite noisy on occasion (i know a strat doesnt help this) and i just want to have it looked over, and perhaps some new valves
it also needs new Ohms selectors as it currently has the old type (removable pins) which have been internally bridged to 8ohms, meaning i have to run 2 cables to my cab, dont think this is ideal

Marshall do offer this service, but i am in chester, so it's a long way to go just to get it done,
i also have no idea on prices for the work, can anyone enlighten me

is there anywhere else, preferably in the north west that anybody knows about

The valves will probably be ok, its leaky capacitors I'd be worried about.

looks like it's had a cap replaced at some point, the rest of it looks original, well certainly not new

not clued up on it really, it sounds great but i want to make sure it's 100%

I'm interested in the answer to this too. My silver anniversary Marshall combo has a similar problem. I'm guessing that because it's 20 years old this year it's likely to need a cap job. I'd be curious to know what the ball park figure is for getting this done at Marshall, or indeed a decent amp tech.

From an investment point of view, is a cap job likely to affect its future value? Amps dating back to the 50's and 60's presumably wouldn't work any more if they've not had their caps changed at least once in their life, unlike a guitar, where any modification is reflected in the value.

I've always wanted one, but how easy are they to service/repair?

You could have a chat with Tony at Oakleysound

http://www.oakleysound.com/

He concentrates on synths but does amps too, and he's always good with advice over the phone. Also he might know of somewhere closer to you than Penrith where he is.

I once had an amp serviced by Marshall and did it by courier. It was a small Valvestate so I figured I'd take the risk. They did a good job and it was returned in one piece sounding better.

I've got a JCM800 50 watt head now and I'd like to get that serviced, but the thought of some oike lobbing it into the back of a transit to be taken to Marshall scares me. Does anyone know of a fragile items courier company? That might be the answer.

Not that it'll help some of the down-southers but my JCM800 head is in for a service with Dennis Marshall who makes these: -

It would be worth talking to the guy at your local guitar shop. Mine was very confident about servicing my Park valve amp and seemed to know all the stuff I'd been reading about.

Marshall HQ are in Bletchley, adn they offer servicing/repairs etc. Had mine done there a while ago.

If you are not too far away definitely worth taking it to them.

Visit to Marshall, while it seems a way will be well worth the trip. Their service is excellent, they are very cheap.

I know a few good valve amp guys in London but doesn't help the oop Norf people..

Hi Stu,

The guy who used to look after my amps has moved out of London, any recommendations in the London area would be well received!
