I'm a logical person, but this just seems too weird. I'm a big fan of Beethoven, and have been trying to see his 9th Symphony for years. The weird thing is that I've never managed it..

Years ago at University I booked tickets to see a performance of Beethoven's 9th, but unfortunately I was ill and couldn't go.

Last September, I booked tickets for a Prom but there was a fire at the Royal Albert Hall and the prom was cancelled: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5310776.s...

On Saturday, my girlfriend and I were due to see the 9th again. We'd been joking all week about what strange disaster would befall us, and sure enough when we turned up we found out that for 'technical reasons' the performance was cancelled: http://www.anvilarts.org.uk/whatson/2007/sep/A7JO0...

It was performed at the Proms again this year, but sadly I was busy. I would have been home in time to record it, but there was an accident on the M3 and I was too late to set the recorder running...

The strange thing is that I go to about 8 or 9 concerts a year, and have never had any other concert cancelled. Can someone explain this rationally?!!

Have we always had a music forum?

Anyway, I reckon it's some sort of Haitian voodoo curse placed upon you. All the signs are there.

I would tell you what they are but I don't want to...

Before Saturday I thought it was just a bit amusing, but now it's got me really curious! I'm a totally logical person, but I'm confused by the odds of this happening..

This is interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_the_ninth

Stop it! You're giving me the heebeejeebies now!

I reckon it's just a co-inky dink.

Of course it could be the curse. Just watch out for any black cats watching you strangely, wear some garlic round your neck, carry a stake, a cross and a gun containing a single, hand made, sterling silver bullet with the letters 'A.M.' engraved on it.

Just to be safe. smile

At the end of the day, I just want to see the 9th live!! I'm sick of all the fires, 'technical hitches' etc etc...

I feel your pain.

When is the next concert? Maybe we can do a PH sweepstake to see if you can make it? hehe

There's a performance of the 9th on December the 1st at the Royal Festival Hall, but sadly I'm down the road at the Royal Albert Hall for a concert that night. The only other one I can find is in Croydon, and I'm not sure it'll be that good.

I've just called the box office from Saturday's concert, and they're transferred our tickets to a performance of Beethoven's 4th piano concerto and 3rd symphony in January, which I'm really looking forward to as they're my two favourite Beethoven pieces. smile

The 4th piano concerto is a lovely piece of music, it's not a bad compensation at all!

I have to admit that my knowledge of classical music isn't really that great, but I do like to dabble a little, I have a soft spot for the likes of Elgar, Beethoven and Holst. When I was at uni, and din't fancy listening to any distracting music when I was working at home I used to pop on a copy of Radio 2's 100 Greatest Classics, which has a really good selection and sort of got me into it.

I picked it up in a Sainsbury's bargain bucket and decided to buy it just out of curiosity.

I actually prefer the 4th concerto to the more commonly performed 5th. The first few bars are just magical smile The orchestra coming in in a different key works so well yes

Oh yes, definately have to agree with you.

There is somthing about classical music that I find enthralling, nobody in my family seems to like it at all though.

I love listening, closing my eyes and just letting my mind wander. I have a surround sound system at home and when you are surrounded by the sound it is awesome, and very very relaxing.

Personally, I just love music. Whether it's Shostakovich, Beethoven, Soundgarden, Keane or Fear Factory; I just adore listening to music smile

hehe

I know what you mean, you haven't seen my totally eclectic music collection!

It goes from Abba paperbag, including such stuff as Black Grape, The Mars Volta and Pink Floyd to ZZ Top, again paperbag.

I always think it's good to have a varied taste. Though at the moment the only new music I have access to is on a French music channel so I've been downloading lot's of French tunage recently!

I don't suppose you've heard what I've been trying get hold of for a while then have you? I was at a party at someone's house in France a year or two ago and I heard some traditional French music (the squeeze box thing they use) with a soft of Daft Punk makeover. It was fantastic biggrin

I remember a while ago hearing some really tuneful accordion style music. Though they haven't played any Daft Punk style stuff for a while (I get MCM, which plays a lot of French chart and Urban stuff, there is a cracking group called 'Fatal Bazooka', a bit like Goldie Lookin Chain, but French!)

Saying that, I downloaded some classic Daft Punk and Air tunes last week.

The London Mozart Players are doing it at the Fairfield in Croydon next May - the concert hall's a bit down at heel but it's a great acoustic and the LMP are a fabulous band, you won't hear a tighter performance.

Was that the one you were concerned about?

Yes, my girlfriend lives near there (Beckenham), and she said it wasn't the best of places. Would you say it's worth the trip then? I don't know it at all.

Yes (just moved from Beckenham myself smile )

It is a bit down at heel (not grotty really, just not been updated since the 60s and 70s. It used to be a major venue but it has fallen out of grace frown It's still a great acoustic, and the LMP are a fantastic orchestra. Definitely recommended smile Parking just next door or a quick walk from East Croydon station / tram.
