Ok, looking for recommendations - I normally wield a Gibson SG in anger but I've lately been playing a lot of stuff that needs that Dick Dale/Chris Isaak tremolo sound and fancy buying something with a big tremolo bridge that better suits blues/jazz/rock n roll. To be honest, I'm just in love with the way these guitars look (think BB's Lucille) and have made up this as an excuse to buy one and pretend I'm on a Tarantino soundtrack.

However, I don't want to spend a fortune - as mentioned, SG is my main event so I was thinking around the £3-400 for something half decent that I can get a decent sound out of.

Aesthetic appeal almost as important as sound (if you know what I mean), what do you guitaristas suggest?

Are we talking large semi-acoustics here? A guy at my college had a nice Ibanez with a HUGE bigsby style tremolo, worth a shout?

I'm more of an air guitarist so I can't see mine. Sounds bloody good, though! (sorry)

What about a Gretsch? I think you can get one for the amount you want to spend, although I don't know much about their model line up. I've always fancied one though.

I'd love a Gretsch but had always assumed they were much too expensive - however a quick Google shows up this:

http://www.guitarvillage.co.uk/product-detail.asp?...

Very nice! Will check out Ibanez as well...

Thanks guys - you're definitely on the right track...

ETA it's going to be a birthday present from the good lady and she has just told me budget is £600!!! Happy days...

Guitar Village is a great shop too. The two shops local to me are them and Andertons in Guildford and I much prefer the atmosphere at GV, and their prices are cheaper too. I notice their "boss gone mad" sale was on this weekend too. Lucky I missed it or I would have ended up buying something this weekend! hehe

I've never been actually - the best known local one to me in Glasgow is Merchant City Music and a quick browse of their website shows that they stock Gretsch so methinks a trip to try one out is in order. Well excited now! Got my SG from my folks for my 18th and never felt the urge to add to it until now...

Any particular Epiphone's you'd reccommend? I had a (quick) look at their line up and didn't see much in the way of Bigsby bridges but as I say, it was just a quick look...

Cheers,

Gylen

Will def post a pic. Right now I'm erring towards the above Gretsch but in pearl white. And I will probably get a silver guitar strap for itsmile Unfortuantely my birthday is not until the end of November so facing two months of wanting!

I think you could go much worse than checking out an Epiphone Elitist LP

Totaly awesome guitars...No trem bridge though...

I'll dig out a pic if you give me a couple of mins hehe

Another vote for GV. I shudder to think how much money I have given them in the last 10 years. Service has always been fantastic & always willing to haggle if there is cash in front of them smile

Yeah, Sound Control is good too - I bought my SG from their West End store way back when it was Academy of Sound. Not so keen on the big store on Jamaica Street for some reason - I think I just like that small music shop vibe. Will check them out though, girlfriend has decided that a nice Autumnal stroll through the city with regular stops for pints of cider and guitar test runs will be a good waste of a Saturday and i'm inclined to agree...

Will check out the Epiphones too but I suspect that the lack of tremolo will put me off. The SG obviously hasn't got tremolo which is great because it stays in tune and is great for rock but I really wish I could do those surf rock style tremolo chords...

Have you seen the peavey Jazz fusion range, amazing quality for the price and some come with Bigsby style trem.. The Epiphones are ok, and many come in the style you want, but quality differs alot, so try loads before you buy..Ibanez are pretty consistent but may be out of price range with features you want.

wasted years

Been giving it some thought - what about Jackson Surfcasters. My fav is the SC3.

Nice work guys - I had even considered Jackson as last time I was guitar shopping, they were serious 'metal' guitars. The Epiphone Sheraton looks nice too so will try one out. I've not been shopping yet but the bigger my list to try out, the better...

Spent the last week or so building some 'vintage' type tones on my Pod. And now disovered that they've discontinued the FB4 pedal that's compatible with my older Pod. Typical! Hopefully, Ebay should turn one up...

Update for you all - the girlfriend took me guitar shopping this morning and I have returned with a brand new Gretsch Electromatic. Yes, in white. I tried a few Epiphones but they weren't really for me and I saw a nice Ibanez which was a bit on the pricey side. No sign of any Jackson surfcasters but they had just got a batch of the Gretsches in and to try one was to love one.

To be honest, it wasn't just the sound. I think a combination of the style, finish and evocative name won me over. And I got it from GuitarGuitar in Glasgow as they seem to be the rarest guitars ever and no-one had them. It's this one:

Now I have to wait until the 20th of November as she has said I'm NOT getting it until birthday!

Thanks for your help everyone...
