Deep Purple - Live In London on CD at last !!!!!
Discussion
Yep got mine and its excellent. The CDs sound really good, and very heavy. In places the singers seem to struggle just a bit but this merely adds to the excitement. Highlights: Burn, Mistreated and You Fool No One. The band also produce an above average Smoke On The Water here, which is very welcome from Deep Puple Mk 3. I’m still not convinced by Mark 3’s renditions of Space Truckin’ though, not even after the 31 minutes of it here. Sorry.
If I have one criticism it would be that its obvious the band knew they were being recorded as things are kept quite tight - you only have to play this back to back with, say, Tits and Perk (San Diego) where Blackmore attacks Burn with such aggression that it seems as if he's about to spontaneously combust on the spot. His guitar is forced into incredible growls and screams, with the feedback usually kept (only just) under control. With the track being dragged along at an improper speed, and nearly coming off the rails entirely at times, the rest of the band are left to just try and keep up and somehow hold it all together. Live In London seems much calmer and measured.
Despite this its a stunning CD, a complete concert superbly produced as always by DPAS.
The booklet is impressive, crammed with pix, fans’ memories of the 1974 UK tour, the thorough and extensive liner notes we have grown accustomed to, info on the history of the recording and its many incarnations on BBC tape, vinyl and finally CD.
Highly recommended - This is going to be in my car CD player for weeks to come. Oh and be sure to PLAY IT LOUD !!!!
