Evening All,
Following on from hearing Inferno by Placebo overlayed on a PH'ers video of a recent run, I trundled off to Amazon...
Whilst there, in addition to ordering Meds and Once more with feeling by Placebo, I also added in a bit of the Communards (to remind me of times when I wasn't 37! ) and discovered Evanescence, resulting in Fallen and The Open Door also going into the basket.
So, fellow PHers, what else would people recommend that is on the harder edge of rock, without falling over the edge into metal?

Listen to 'Heavyweight Champion Of The World' and 'He Said He Loved Me' loud.

Pearl Jam - Ten
3 Colours Red - Pure
The Wildhearts - Earth Vs The Wildhearts
Soundgarden - Superunknown (although that veers damn close to metal in places!)
Temple Of The Dog - Temple Of The Dog
Sugar - Copper Blue
The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Some early to mid 90's goodness for ya!

Oh, yeah, and Pandora, which I thought was no longer available to non-US users, but seems to be working at the mo...http://www.pandora.com/

Depends on what kind of metal you are referring to. There are various genres of Metal, Heavy, Symphonic, Power, Extreme Power, Death, Black and so on.
Similar to Evanescence (but better IMHO) are Within Temptation (Symphonic Metal). They have been going a lot longer than Evanescence.
Saw them in concert and they were fantastic.

One of my Favourites, Nightwish. They've got a new vocalist (they sacked their opera trained one). This went gold in Finland two days after it was released last week and is now number 1 in the singles chart. New album is due out the end of September/Early October.

This was number one in the Finnish album charts for most of this year. Ari Koivunen, Fuel For The Fire. Quite a good album in an 80's Bon Jovi Rock kind of way.

Or alternatively, you could try HIM. New Album "Venus Doom" is out in September.

I'm a bit bored of all the UK based guitar driven indie rock, so am more into European stuff.

I'll give them a look! Pandora is a godsend for just dropping tracks you like in and finding similar stuff!
Basically, the easiest way to indicate where my tastes lie in terms of extremes of metal is everything short of the point where they just start shouting or screaming instead of actually singing.

Tim feehan-Wheres the fire. Very hard to get hold of and only just converted it to mp3 format after getting hold of "The Wraith" soundtrack which is now an expensive collectors item
This is a video I made with a crudely edited version of the song;
