I've been listening to a couple of albums by Ugly Duckling recently, and think they're fantastic - Fun, old school hip-hop. Can anyone recommend any other artists with a similar style as I haven't heard anything with quite the same style before (except maybe The Pharcyde)

...Anyone else here think the drumbeat at the beginning of that would go very well with Aerosmith's Walk this Way??Fittster said:

These are all great recommendations and I just love this sort of musical hip-hop.
All the DJ Format albums are great but you might want to check MC Abdominal's solo stuff too - he guests on loads of Format tunes as does Charlie Tuna from J5. Another couple to try are Buck 65 from Canada and some Brit stuff by Roots Manuva, AIM and Ray & Christian.
Great thread!

I got the Abdominal CD on Saturday and I'm listening to it in the car. There's no questioning his skill on the mike but none of the tracks on the album have really jumped out at me like I'll Culinary Behaviour. All the DJ Format albums are great but you might want to check MC Abdominal's solo stuff too - he guests on loads of Format tunes as does Charlie Tuna from J5. If you like this sort of thing make sure you pick up DJ Yoda's mix CDs.

Thanks for the heads up on Buck 65 - I'll check them out. I'm been listening to Roots Manuva and AIM this week too, better go and dig some R&C out now!All the DJ Format albums are great but you might want to check MC Abdominal's solo stuff too - he guests on loads of Format tunes as does Charlie Tuna from J5. I only have Run Come Save Me by Roots Manuva, whats the rest of his stuff like?
The first Roots Manuva album is a *lot* less polished and his voice has a much thicker accent but it's still probably my favourite. It's proper hip-hop y'know? People rapping in their own accents rather than some adopted, top40 gangsta tone.
For Abdominal the first album "flotation device" is my fave of the two, the "... pigeon hole" one has a few stinkers on it but still good.
Some other stuff to try would be UNKLE (much more melodic but still great beats), DJ Shadow (last album is a bit of a stinker but "Private Press" rules) and don't forget Beastie Boys - their latest 3 albums have been stellar!

It's patchy though right? That said, I saw him live not so long ago and he was just inspirational!
Another great way to hear new stuff (for free!) is to sign up to www.pandora.net which is a web radio station where you can create your own stations based upon example tracks or artists. There is so much great stuff on there I've never heard before. It is only available to US territories though but whatever you do DON'T just surf for a random US postcode and stick that in ... even though this will make it work perfectly

Great thread! I've seen UD live twice, they are utterly, uytterly excellent.
As has been suggested, I also like a bit of DJ format, Jurassic 5, Pharcyde, Beatnuts, etc etc.
A defintie must have alsbum is the Private Press by DJ shadow. Try get the US import one with the bonus CD aswell, expensive but worth it.
One of the very few albums that I will get out of its box, turen the lights down, and sit central in front of the speakers and listen end to end.
Theres so many layers, styles and sounds, its amazing. A lot of it isnt even conventional music, its jsut an audio journey.
But it. Now.
Will check my itunes tonight and psot some more suggestions along the lines of UD, theres loads i will have forgotten.
