What are the pieces you've worked on for years, but still can't quite get?

On guitar, mine is the 'head cuttin duel' from the film Crossroads, as played by Steve Vai.
And the intro to Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson, as played live in Austin City Limits.

Got the notes more or less, but the picking and articulation, ugh.

Pianist here, basically any song with a jazzy solo - I'm great at reading music and playing a song by ear but when it comes to improvisation I'm terrible.
I'm also rubbish at writing new songs. Every time I think I've created something nice I realise it's something I've heard before.

Classical Gas, Tommy Emmanuelle. Guitar
Perpetuum mobile. Piano

Both frustrating on timing, multiple rhythms with the same hand and just general bd hardness for me!

Guitar here

The furious ascending sequence Gary Moore plays in the "Out in the fields" solo

I managed a 3/4 speed version a few years back but never been able to repeat it,

at 100% speed? Forget it

The guy was a beast.

Guitarist here. For me it’s Joe Bonamassa and Eric Johnson’s descending pentatonic runs. Especially considering each note is actually picked, rather than hammer-ons and offs.

Over the last four weeks or so I've been learning Larry Carlton's solo for "Kid Charlemagne" and it's getting there. But I'm in the middle bit where it's not just the fretting hand I have to concentrate on, but the picking hand as well! Do I sweep pick those first three notes, or do I alternate pick them? Then how do I pick the notes on the high E after that when pedalling on the E at fret 9 on the 4th string! It is getting there............

But.

Jazz arpeggios (looking at you, Rick Beato), tremolo picking (looking at you, EVH), and wide interval tapping (again, looking at you, EVH) I do struggle with.

I can't do anything that involves either fret tapping or using a slide. We play Tush in our set, so I just cheat and use my third finger and slide it up and down the neck to the general tune of the song. paperbag To be fair while it doesn't sound quite like the record, it does the job.

Silly one at the moment is more down to just trying to blag it at each rehearsal, rather than sit down and look at the tab/Youtube; the second solo in '2468 Motorway', but again I play something that fits and ends in time for me to sing the chorus...that's half the battle; coming out of the solo and hitting the next vocal line.

The very last part of the alter bridge ‘blackbird ‘ solo , it’s just very fast fretting and picking , the only comfort is I see a lot of pro players cheat and play it legato but it’s just too fast for me either way .

I've never got to grips with the slide at all, especially lead work. Other than that classical guitar pieces that take ages to learn - I don't have the patience (or time) anymore.

My current nemesis is Dupuytren's contracture, it doesn’t half fk up your guitar playing.

Few sylosis tunes that I’m expecting to take years to get. Dunno about nemesis, they’re just hard as nails and guitar is not my main instrument, good to have something to work towards smile

The Who: Won't Get Fooled Again

It's mostly fairly simple. Moon never played it the same twice anyway, so you can lean into the "feel" without needing it to be an accurate beat-for-beat. It's not too fast or complex UNTIL the final break and then the intros into the last part. Those intros really need to be beat-for-beat perfect and I've not got it right yet.

The Police: Every Little Things She Does Is Magic

Honestly, this isn't my nemesis because I am just not good enough to get it right so I just don't try. But I want to.

I've been beaten by a solo arrangement of 'The Entertainer' off and on for years. It's just never worked out, not sure why. I've never had any problems with Classical Gas, which I think in some ways is harder.

I'm not a musician, but I'm intrigued that nobody seems able to play Chris Thile's Ode To A Butterfly on any instrument, let alone a Mandolin.

Delusions of grandeur. Also, I bribed the doorman.

To be fair he did knock, gradually getting faster.
