She’s 13 in a week, and I’d like to make her a mix tape/playlist as part of it.

In essence, the sort of stuff people listened to when I was a kid (I’m 53) and what I liked (and still do). She isn’t into male singers or metal/rock.

I’m thinking…

Various Blondie (rapture and heart of glass in particular)
Siouxsie and the Banshees (Hong Kong garden, peekaboo etc)
Early Madonna (like a Virgin etc)
Fleetwood Mac
The Go-Go’s

That sort of thing.

Any other ideas?

Good list that, The Go Go's especially cool.

Suggest adding The Bangles, Nena (99 Red Balloons), The B-52's, Bananarama (Cruel Summer - great song) & Yazoo. Hopefully some space for Sonic Youth as Kim Gordon sings on a few of their records.

I can't stand them, but The Eurythmics have a female singer.

Have a look at any of the Now series for a real mix going back to the 80s.

Is there any particular era she likes or do you just want 80s-ish? But some female singers, to name a few, off the top of my head include

Tina Turner
Cyndi Lauper
Alison Moyet
Madonna
Bananarama
Kylie
Kate Bush
Tori Amos
Lana Del Ray
Lady Gaga
Katy Perry
Adele
Whitney Houston
Gloria Estefan
Tiffany/Debbie Gibson
Garbage
Diana Ross
Aretha Franklin
Neneh Cherry

This is a good idea - also search on Spotify for eg 80s Deep Dive will throw up some slightly less well known songs / jog your memory

We took our 14 year old niece to an 80s festival (Cruel World in Pasadena), and the bands she was most excited to see were Duran Duran, Blondie, and Soft Cell.

Can’t believe you didn’t get the B52s in there, Cindy and Kate were (are) ultra cool

To add to the lists with tracks

Borderline, Madonna
Atomic, Blondie
Running up that hill, Kate Bush
Since Yesterday, Strawberry Switchblade
Slave to the rhythm, Grace Jones
Voyage voyage, Desireless

Thank you so much folks, great suggestions!

Of modern stuff, she does like Lana del Rey (as do I!)

Voice of the Beehive - Don't call me baby
Sam Brown- Stop
The Sundays - Summertime
Republica - Ready to go (a bit later in 96)
TingTings - That's not my name (again later but female rather than male singer)

I’m same age as the OP with a 14yo daughter…

As well as many of the aforementioned, esp Blondie, I’d add Garbage, Pixies, Mazzy Star, Goldfrapp, Cranberries, Killing Heidi, Ali Barter, Melissa auf der Maur, Hole, Transvision Vamp, Tanya Donnelly, Echobelly, and a few more I’ll think of later…

I’ve just realised (7 years too late) that I’m closer to my eighties than *the* eighties, and would be down were it not for the great suggestions. Spotify is getting a hammering!

A couple more to add, having a daughter a similar age!

Saint Etienne, specifically Foxbase Alpha, and The Cranberries.

Tess Parks.

Cross between Mazzy Star (vocals) and Brian Jonestown Massacre (sound).

Saw her a couple of years back and she was great. smile
