Mary Ann Hobbs On Radio 6
Discussion
As a long term listener to Radio 6, I have enjoyed many of the regular shows, the spread of different types of music ticks all of my boxes. It is also the chosen station in our office at work, to avoid radio bingo we remain tuned in all day, I dread to think how life would be if Heart was glued on the dial all day.
My sweet spot was probably with Shaun Keavney and Nemone in the morning, but as is typical in life, things move on.
A few years ago, Mary Ann Hobbs snuck in for shows at the weekend, I liked her choice of music and slightly dreamy presenting style. Before long, she was elevated to a daily show in the morning, she clearly has a snappy team around her and the music is generally very good - Although it can occasionally stray into gothic scream rock.
However, it is not all plain sailing, as MAH brings more than just music to our ears - She also brings her personal baggage, which is full of frankly difficult to believe tales of oppression in her youth ( think father burning her record collection whilst chanting ‘you must go to Church’ ), excruciating tales of hob nobbing with the current hot new artist ( who she typically discovered years ago ), and shameless name dropping on a biblical level of her intimate experiences with her musical heroes ( a few weeks ago we were told of the Bowie ‘smell’ that was so familiar to her after she had shared a lift ride with him ( Bowie appears to be an obsession )). Added to this is her choice to steal her fellow DJs music - Rare tunes that have been unearthed by the likes of Gilles Peterson are scrumped without mercy.
Rant over.

I find her unlistenable. The rambling chat without ever seeming having a point which always ends with her saying “anyway…” is very irritating. The music choices on 6 are varied and that’s part of what makes it good, but she seems to play plenty of stuff that just isn’t mid-morning show material to my ears. They really need to find something else for her to do.
On the whole I like her but listening to her show does mean withstanding a fair amount of pretentiousness.
Whenever I hear something along the lines of “Hi Maryanne, for this piece I wanted to explore the (insert deep and meaningful feelings about deep and meaningful subject) , I know the next five minutes of music are going to be utter dogs
t.
But she does play some quality DnB every now and again and Techno Tuesday is usually pretty decent.

As of this week, MAH no longer on R6, taking a sabbatical. Looks like she will be back at some point, but I'm guessing in some sort of "specialist" slot, given the main schedule looks pretty solid now.
Apparently she feels that her personal mission to change daytime music on 6 has been achieved, and her creative life needs to move on (!). Good news for me, at least.

I’m liking the new mornings set-up on 6m, it seems much less straight-faced with Grimmy and Lauren.
As mentioned previously, I do like MAH but maybe better suited to occasional or evening slots.
Yes. Much better. As mentioned previously, I do like MAH but maybe better suited to occasional or evening slots.
MAH was a really, really, odd choice for weekdays.
He’s now one of my favourites of the daytime lineup
