Yacht Rock? What's your understanding.

Some poor, misguided fools on the radio have been describing Steely Dan as Yacht Rock Pioneers. Which couldn't really be further from the truth. Bland, aspirational music about how great it was to be rich. Soundtrack for the greed is good Eighties.

Don't dismiss yacht rock, lots of great music comes under that banner but like you I can't really see Steely Dan's song about 'chasing the dragon' in Time Out Of Mind would be something you do with a load of 'ok yars' on a yacht or discussing the man who made the finest LSD in America like in the song Kid Charlemagne but do remember people like Michael Mcdonald were adding vocals on that Christopher Cross album and a great album it was.

I stumbled across Yacht Rock as a term yesterday, friend sent me a link to a 4-parter on BBC4 written and produced by Katie Puckrick.

This is a genre I would call AOR or MOR. 'Yacht' seems to be a hipster title to give it a new label. I normally like Katie Puckrick, but there's a huge amount of pseudo pyschobabble in the programme, loads of BS about Michael McDonald's inner existentialism on 'What A Fool Believes' ... do me a favour!!
There's a Yacht Rock Disco at Glastonbury on Thursday, I'll be sticking my head round the door of the William's Green stage to see what they're selling as 'Yacht'. ... have ironed my Hall & Oates t-shirt especially!

Yatch Rock is a rerospective genre first named / discovered in 2010. Running from the mid 70's to the mid 80's it consists of, it would appear, randomly chosen AOR of a wide diversity, but is mainly Southern Californian soft rock.
I checked it out on Amazon and there are several Yatch Rock compilations with artistes such as Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Seals and Croft and Christopher Cross as an example.
As a 'new' gentre it is open to interpretation and I thought the BBC4 two parter lost it's way a bit when highlighting the 80's. But the 70's programme was spot on with the sort of music that fitted well with the definition.

You’re right that it’s an in trend term. Apparently came into existence in c2007 to describe this sort of music, so it’s retro applied rather than having been created at the time.https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0005wwn

Not strictly true.Check out who's on the first Christopher Cross album, Jay Graydon, Chuck Findley, Larry Carlton, Victor Feldman.
