I have just bought a set of bagpipes. There are no instructions. Obviously, once I have got them together, they will sound great, but there's so many sodding bits, I'm confused right now. Anyone know which bits fit together>

I am very pleased as the tartan will match the seats in my boyfriends Golf GTI.

Any help much appreciated.

Ben.

There are no instructions on purpose. If there were, there's a chance someone might play 'em! eek

Assembling them is part of the challenge. A clue though - you have two different instruments there.

I have to say I am intrigued, wonder if you can answer a question..

What drives a person to want to play the bagpipes so much they they actually put the plan into action?

Did your neighbours run your dog over?

I know a vet who could have that back on its feet in 10 minutes.

That set's not right. Looks like they've sent you a Campbell chanter with McKinnon style drones.

They really won't. They never do.

Yes, place all the bits in upside down in the rubbish bin outside, then you're sure of getting a lovely noise from them.....

....Silence. smile

You neighbours will thank me later.

Isn't a gentleman defined north of the border as one who can play the pipes and chooses not to?

There a cheap set, made in the far east (probably of rosewood).

Nothing more than wall hangers for decoration.

A decent set will cost £600 upwards.

Here's how a set goes together :-

You assemble them by taking a shovel , a bottle of whiskey and the pipes, placethem in the boot of your car . You then drive to kielder Forest and walk to the middle of the forest ,you then dig a hole and place the bagpipes in the hole ,fill in the hole then leave ,on returning home delete your sat nav history and drink the whiskey .

Thanks chaps, I'll have another crack at it tonight. I'm expecting similar complaints from the neighbours as when I drunkenly played my Trombone at 2am.

Aside from your soon to be on first name relationship with the neighbours - and not the ones you think, I'm talking about the whole street!

It would appear you have both a chanter pipe and a set of pipes there.

Take the pipe on the far right of the pic, stick a double reed into the end of it, then stick on the mouth piece - 4th from the right.
(the one with the plastic flange on the end and the one with the longish white mouthpiece pointing you)
I cannot see which of those reeds, if any, are the chanter reeds. (it is two bits of reed together, similar to an oboe reed)

This is your learning pipe, I just managed to play this, be warned it takes a LOT of puff.

When I was loaded up with the full pipes I managed less than a minute and I lost vision, saw stars, then fainted. And that was when I was fairly fit!

I remember seeing that guy with his old band The Kilted Generation playing in the street in Adelaide. They made a fantastic noise with their traditional instruments. I don't think he had the flame throwers then though.

It's actually an electronic pipe he's playing. The bag, drones (and flame thrower) are just for show.
