Looking for info - Daughter's Local Radio Station Show
Discussion
My daughter is co-host on a local radio show on Wednesday nights.
Her and her wee pal have been doing it for about 4 weeks.
They used to play songs using YouTube on the studio computers to get the music, but they have been told this is a no no due to copyright issues.
I have a very comprehensive collection of music on my NAS at home, but it kind of finishes before the Millennium
With them being 14 years old, they are looking to play a lot of chart stuff.
Unfortunately they don't have the money to buy CDs all the time, and the station only has a limited supply of music as well.
Does anyone on here work in local radio? If so, how do you get your songs?
I first thought she could use Spotify but I don't think the license covers this either.
My daughter came up with the idea of playing Spotify on her ipad, whilst recording the output using a headphone male to male cable plugged into her laptop to record a new mp3 version of the song but again, I am not too sure on the legality of this?
I'm hoping someone on here works in this area and can advise as they are really stuck and they are just starting to get up and running with the whole thing.
Any info is much appreciated!

It's a bit of a grey area and my knowledge is limited. The radio station will need permission andbthe correct licensing to play each track. They will also need to keep a track of what songs they do have and play to comply with ofcom regulations.
It would be best to discuss with the station owners what you intend to play and get the ok. To cover yourself it would be best to download the tracks from the likes of Amazon or itunes so you can document or legal purchase. A lot of cds and tracks may have disclaimer stating you are unable to broadcast tracks without permission.

I've found this page from your link - http://www.prsformusic.com/users/broadcastandonlin...but i'm still not sure what this entitles them to do? i.e. if they pay £732, can the play music from various sources e.g. cds, streaming services, etc.?
It's not very clear to me

I think community stations just pay a blanket fee rather than per track. I would have thought that playing directly off youtube would be a bit of a no go though.
When I did Community Radio and RSL's we used to buy our own stuff to play (and it was more expensive then as you sometimes had to buy a whole CD to get a particular track). Downloads were only just starting to get going.
I think for the short period we were a community station (before it folded), some volunteers tried to approach companies for promotional CD's. Unfortunately we were not able to get these, as we were deemed to be too small, promos were only sent to larger commercial stations.
Apart from local band promos or sourcing what we wanted to play from other people in the station's collections, we had to buy virtually that everything we played.
