Allegri's Misere

A quick heads up, Harry Christopher's choral group, The Sixteen will be performing the Misere at 7:30pm on radio three this evening.

This is by some distance a wonderful piece of music & was banned from being played outside of the Sistine chapel by Pope Urban VIII & upheld by successive Popes because of it's beauty. It only escaped from the Vatican in 1770 when Mozart as a child visiting Rome heard it & later wrote it down from memory.

And now back to arguing about guitars.

'Miserere' is by far and away my favourite choral piece. Absolutely stunning, I still haven't heard it live though

I have requested it twice on Classic FM and had it played twice as well! Someone must share my opinion!

I have a cd of a friend's son singing this when he was head chorister at Kings. It is divine.

Will hopefully catch it on iPlayer - one of those pieces of music that just demands attention. And that high solo line always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

I love the work of HC and The Sixteen, although - I must admit - the best version I've heard is by an outfit called Tenebrae.
