The film 'Searching for Sugar Man' covers the story of this guy (go google it).I had never heard of him but several decades ago, he was churning out some amazing stuff..

I've heard way too much of him. He was very popular in South Africa in a weird kind of secret cult that everyone's in kind of way. Everyone knew him and thought noone else did.
I still haven't been able to determine for sure if he's alive or dead. Legend was he died in the '70s but then in the 2000s Just Jinger ripped off one of his songs and got sued for royalties, apparently by the man himself.

I'm also from South Africa, like alfanatic above, and I've been loving Rodriguez' music for ages. Some songs have been overplayed here (Sugarman, I Wonder) but others are delicate, poetic, poignant and beautiful.
I saw him live the first time he toured SA, and it was lovely. None of the usual ego and bulls
t that accompanies most acts on tour, just a slightly old man almost in tears because some corner of the world knew every word to all of his songs when he thought he'd subsided into obscurity. What a brilliant story, and a really brilliant man.
I've not yet seen Searching for the Sugarman, but I will buy it ASAP.

I've got Sugar Man playing away on my PC as I type, great tune.
What a wonderful film - quite an incredible story.
I bought both his studio albums since watching the film, second one (After the Fact) doesn't quite jump out like the first one, but only managed one listen-through so far.
