Buying a used Electric guitar - where from?

If you don't mind me saying so, that's a very strange question. The only way it makes sense is if you are buying for somebody else.
In any case, you give the impression of not knowing an awful lot about this sort of thing, so probably your best bet would be to go to a reputable dealer, at least you will have the Sale of Goods Act to protect you should a problem arise.

As said above, it does depend on the sutuation. If you are buying for someone else, or for yourself, and either the recipient or yourself know a bit about guitars and can tweak the set up if need be, then i can recommend GAK. I have purchased quite a few guitars from them, always exceelent service, and if your are near brighton then popin to their shop.
Failing the above, if you can get to london, there are a few shops in denmark street that stock fenders. One shop in particular (i forget the name) is literally full of fender kit, so im sure you would get what you are looking for there.

You don't need a Fender/Gibson (unless you need the brand for vanity reasons) - there are many other quality brands (Gordon Smith, PRS, Yamaha, Ibanez, Tokai, etc)
And finally, don't buy from Denmark Street!

I'd echo the above. Depending on your needs, you can pay anywhere between £500 and £500,000 for the guitar, and I imagine there would be a similar spread on the amplifier, depending on rarity and provenance.
