Good headphones for music production

Okay, I know you should produce music out loud through monitor speakers, but living in a tiny rented house means I can't make a lot of noise or convert a room to have the correct acoustics. Therefore, can anyone recommend some good headphones that will at least get me close to something that sounds finished so I can spend the minimum amount of time/money in a hired studio polishing the mix? I could spend up to about £200.

As you mentioned, mixing through headphones is possible but no the ideal. There are plenty of options as far as decent headphones go why not try some AKG K240's for about £100 (nice and clear with good low end), and then spend another £50 on the redline monitor plugin? (It simulates the crossing of sounds from speaker to ear like having monitors in a room) Should help your mixes sound a lot wider and you'll have some change left from £200. (I was in a similar situation last year living in a rented terraced house and trying to get mixes done for Uni work) It's probably the best option if you don't want to be shelling out for studio time! Although i usually record and mix live instruments as supposed to programming Dance stuff, it still worked pretty well for me!

Those AKG headphones will provide a far too bassy EQ, they're designed for tracking, not mixing!

Get the Shure ones, they're pretty cheap comparatively and should do the job very nicely. Make sure to have a listen to several different tracks through them before purchase however.

I use these in the studio - very flat response. And can be had for less than 100 quid. Sennheiser HD280.
