Junior Solo2 is starting violin lessons in September and the tutor has told us not to hire a violin yet until they have measured each child to find the right size.
How do you measure a child to find out what size you need, I never knew there were different size instruments, but then I'd not looked twice at a violin before?
I'd quite like to buy one over the Summer Holidays rather than pay to hire one at almost the same price I can hire at, but of course I need to make sure I have the right size...
Help from the PH masses who know these things please..

Best carried out by an expert which your tutor probably is. Playing the violin successfully is no mean achievement, in itself, all the notes need to be formed. My three kids all learnt Piano and Classical guitar because at Uni and so on carrying a piano is damned difficult.
I would forget the savings. The right instrument, particularly with a violin, is critical, for a young player. You will soon be changing up anyway.

As someone who worked in a music for 8 years I've seen pretty much ever budget violin going; the two brands I'd recommend would be Stentor and Soundpost. Regarding the sizing the general consensus advises the student placing the instrument in its playing positioning and wrapping their "string fingers" around the headpiece. If it's too big a stretch then the instrument is too large.
I would recommend shelling out on a decent set of strings (Thomastik Dominants) and bow whichever instrument you go for.

My experience entirely with guitars. Martin lightweights every time. Even makes the Jap copies playable. The string do matter a lot on string instruments,I would recommend shelling out on a decent set of strings (Thomastik Dominants) and bow whichever instrument you go for.
