I normally play a bit harder stuff (or house) but over the weekend I was going through some of my old photos from our nights out at the old Gatecrasher One in sheffield, inspired me to dig out some of my favourite trance tunes from the early 2000s...

them were the days etc!...

Despite learning the basics about 10 years ago, I unfortunately had several years without access to equipment (until this year) so I'm still finding my feet again at the moment- therefore any comments/feedback welcome.

I know how demoralising it is to put up a mix here, and have NO-ONE say anything about it (even though you see many Gb come down from PH on the website).

Haha cheers! I'm a big fan of your mixes so any feedback will be taken very much onboard

I mix purely for my own pleasure, (normally just in front of mates before a night out or at the odd house party), so I'm never too bothered about bumping these threads- but yes if anyone's listened to a mix I always appreciate any comments/criticisms- it all helps in the long run

When are you hitting Ibiza? We finally got our trip booked last weekend, heading out there for 10 nights on the 20th August- reeeeeally looking forward to seeing Paul Van Dyk, Eddie Halliwell & Laidback Luke @ Amnesia on the thursday!

Right, this was obviously put together with a lot of love. I can just imagine the amount of fun you had putting this together!

Your mixing is nice and tight, and the beat matching for the equipment you have is good as well.
For constructive criticism, you and your music won't improve greatly without an upgrade in equipment. CDJ1000's will allow you much more control over the pitch, thus allowing you longer mixes (obviously PC's will do it all for you if you want). You can get round this slightly in two ways - changing your mixing style to a house/hard house choppy style, or getting platinum notes, mixed in key and the like, and running your music through that before burning the CDs.

All in all, I'd be proud of myself for producing that as a first Trance mix. Nice one!

Umm, I'm what you would call a child of the 70's. That said, I have eclectic taste in music and am downloading your 'big fish, little fish' music. Sounds good so far.

If you want my opinion (and I don't profess to know what I'm talking about) I would agree with Don1. I reckon that's a damned fine effort for a first go.

Regarding the pitch control, since you mentioned that I've just checked and descovered I've had the setting on 10% (the default) rather than 6%- not sure how I missed this! Just been having a play and this is worlds better

The CDJ1000s have the same pitch settings and resolutions as my CDJ900s (and I'd be losing the usb hard-drive & Rekordbox functionality) so not sure that would be an upgrade Don I'm definately looking into mixed-in-key though, looks a fantastic bit of kit. Shame Pioneer Rekordbox doesn't have similar functionality.

I'm still in the 'bedding in' period with the new gear (it's a world away from the archaic CD decks & vinyl turntable I learned on, and the mp3 controller I messed around with for a while) but I'm noticing the mixing getting tighter each time I play and that 6% pitch resolution should help with that too.

Oh, and yes a LOT of fun was had making it! I'm a serious music geek, and still try and get my absolute favourite of tunes on vinyl- by the end of the summer I should have space to finally have my tuntable permanently set-up alongside the CDJs too


I'll say one thing, after several years spent on the dancefloor side of the decks getting back into it has been like getting on a bike again- you don't forget the basics but everything's a bit wobbly at first!

Yeeeaaah, quite liking this. I've only ever mixed vinyl so I have no idea what it's like using CDs/MP3s and all that, but it's nice and tight and there are no cringeworthy chord clashes or anything, at least not so far. Just kidding.

Can't beat a good nostalgia trip now and then.

Most of the vinyl I have is hardhouse/hardtrance from the early 2000's (think Tidy/Tidy Trax stuff), I've got a bit of old trance on vinyl but it's mostly on CD singles or mp3s. I've had to 'convert' all my vinyl to digital (using audacity) for the moment as I don't currently have the space to have my turntable setup, but this should change after the summer.

I'm hopefully aquiring another sizeable vinyl collection soon (from a friend that needs rid) and most of that is classic trance stuff, so I am more than a bit excited!

It's fantastic being able to plug a 320gb external hard-drive into one CDJ and have them both share it, so both decks have access to around a thousand odd tracks, with a cd player to boot. The Pioneer cd decks are fantastic to use (if over-priced), really big jog-wheels, great buttons etc. Still not the same as vinyl though!

I did look very hard at a second hand pair of 1000s- far better built than the newer flagship models- but I really wanted the usb stick functionality! The one thing the 1000s do have that the 900s don't is hot-cues, but aside from that the 900s are a fantastic bit of kit, with an almost identical interface & jog-wheel as the 1000s but with all the modern trappings of the digital era!

There were a few more of his that I could have put in, but eventually settled for this and the Super8 remix of 'Voller Sterne' (probably my personal favourite track in the mix).

I'm going to have to go and dig these out again now, this could be a long night!

Another favourite of mine that I ran out of time for in this mix was Quivver's "She Does"... This will be coming in part 2. Oh, along with the Rapid Eye remix of Timo Maas's "Der Schieber". This track I realised I didn't actually have a full mix version of, so a CD promo copy is currently winging it's way to me from the states as we speak. Curse the internet and it's wallet emptying usefulness...
