Heavy rock verses Heavy metal

Are you arguing about old hard rock vs. new hard rock, or hard rock vs. heavy metal?

I'm not trying to be an arse, it's just that unless this is settled now the thread could take two different courses.

I think you mean the former, and I think the answer is "about 1976", as hard rock shed its hippy/blues side when punk came along, and when it recovered at the very end of the 70s it was a very different beast - more pop than before.

If you mean the latter then heavy metal and hard rock were already diverging at the time Zeppelin were about (IMHO).

Bon Jovi = metal #chuckles#

Turning point for me was Iron Maiden releasing "Iron Maiden", that was the style changed needed to differentiate metal from hard rock.

Tricky one isn't it. To me, Black Sabbath are metal and Deep Purple aren't, yet beyond the actual song "Black Sabbath", which is more or less the defining moment of metal, the rest of the album is heavy rock/blues. As for the likes of Bon Jovi and all the other 80s hair bands, never were metal and never will be, ever.

Wow - flashback time... it's 1979 and I'm at the school record club having just bought in the new (and blue vinyl) Bomber album by Motorhead. We listened. We argued. Some thought HM had to have sort-of-fairytale lyrics (Hawkwind, Rainbow, etc).

Don't think we nailed the HM/HR thing then either (and we were all precociously clever).

There's a difference between "hair metal" and "metal bands with hair". THAT iteration of Pantera aren't metal in the same way Bon Jovi, Europe, Warrant, Poison and Faster Pussycat aren't, whereas Mustaine IS metal but just happens to have quite big hair. A trickier one to classify would be WASP.

Bon Jovi are Stadium Metal!!!

I like both heavy rock and heavy metal mainly 60's and 70's. I would describe metal as having no keyboards, though there are some exceptions!! So:-

Heavy Rock: Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, UFO

Heavy Metal: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead

Led Zeppelin are an anomaly, though their heavy folk influence makes them more rock than metal!

Re Pantera, I wasn't bothered before but someone gave me one of their earlier CDs and I quite like it. Cemetery Gates is also a very good tune.
