Frank Turner

Been vaguely aware of Frank Turner's stuff for a while, but really got into it lately. Simple, well crafted tunes with some fantastic lyrics. They range from singalong stuff to quite profound.

(Coincidentally, I never realised historical Wessex began as far as east as Winchester and ended - for most of its existence - in Dorset. According to Wikipedia I'd actually be a Dumnonia boy, which has a far less pleasing ring to it...)

Love, Ire and Song (I think its called that) is one of my favourite albums, and "Long live the queen" still gives me goosebumps when I hear it.


He is even better live, and seems to constantly be on tour. I've managed to see him about 5 times in the last 2 or 3 years without going very far....

if you get the chance, go see him live, cracking shows and he always looks like he is really enjoying himself on stage.

Indeed. I heard he did 300 gigs last year or something crazy!

Can't imagine it'd be too long before he turns up in North London.

He can usually be found somewhere on the Holloway Road.

My old band supported him a few years ago - good bloke, he's put in a hell of a lot of legwork.

Some of you may like his old band, Million Dead. Bit harder, but his vocals are great.

My girlfriend's band has spent a lot of time around there too. Many a night vaguely remembered at Nambucca and The Gaff.

I'm relatively new to Frank Turner as its not my usual choice in music, but England Keep My Bones has probably been played more than any other album recently.

I fully agree with you OP; the songs go from profound and sad, but without being whiney and emo (redemption) via really really well written lyrics (One foot before the other) to a damn good sing along ballad (If I ever stray). love it.

I've not heard much of Billy Bragg's stuff but I can imagine there is a similarity from what I know of him. I'd like to think Frank Turner is less irritating, though.

Saw him supporting Green Day a year or two back in the stadium, had kind of half-heard his stuff on the radio but never paid attention. Put on a bloody amazing set, really powerful voice that doesn't seem to come across so much in the studio stuff IMHO (though still fantastic I should add!) Really looking forward to seeing him again.

Im not a massive fan of heavy music so his Million Dead stuff doesn't appeal as much his solo acoustic version of Smiling at strangers on trains is a belter and much better than the version with MD

Probably my favourite musician for last 2/3 years.

Seen him live once and his tracks usually on constant rotation in my car.Always comes across as a nice bloke too.

I was going through a bit of a bad time when "england keep my bones" came out and used to end up listening to it when out for a run with tears streaming down my face.

We both like him here, and saw him at Hammersmith a few months ago - his biggest gig to date. Was very good live, and as others have said,really looks to be enjoying himself.

We did toy with going to Wembley, but I dont really like the place, and I do wonder if the show will lose a degree of the intimacy that the Apollo gig had.

I was a big fan of Million Dead, watched them play a few times, soo good live way more fun than a frank Turner gig but you cant deny that the Frank Turner stuff has better song craft and great lyrics

Million Dead supporting Frank Turner would be the best scenario

Saw him at the Wembley Arena gig last night, and it was an absolutely cracking night
Beans on Toast was a legend as per, Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip are a pair I've been into for a long time so it was great to see them there. Billy Bragg isn't really my cup of tea but he went down very well. Frank's set was just incredible Anyone else there by any chance?

Yes i was. And what a night was a little worried how it would go in a big arena. But my worries were unfounded felt just like a tiny personal gig and i get feeling even the people high up in the seats would agree. Absolutly wonderful night only shame was the beer being £4.50 a pint!
