You will find some variations in pop charts depending on who's chart you are looking at. For many ywears there were different chart compliation organisations and they often came up with different sales figures. The best known charts were those compiled for the BBC (Top of the Pops and the Light Programme - later Radio 1) by the British Market Research Bureau. The BMRB charts only started in the early 1960s and finished in 1983 when they lost the gig to Mori.

I thought I was old.The first UK record sales chart was put together in the mid 1950s and were compiled by the music magazines, such as Melody Maker or New Musical Express.
Prior to these charts, music sales were based on sheet music rather than discs.
Up until the early 1960s the "charts" were usually referred to as The Hit Parade.
