Hi guys, I write quite a few songs on a stty program, however it's very useful for me as I don't have anything like Finale or a drumkit, strings etc.

Anyway, I've uploaded several of them to my Soundcloud account. All I'm asking is to spend a few minutes listening to them and providing some feedback. Honestly not worth trying it from my Dad or friends as all I get is either a grunt or "yeah that's really good".

Now they aren't brilliant, most songs I create exist as backing tracks for me to solo over, however these are the more serious productions. None are finished either, nor have they been recorded, thus the crap quality.

ETA: Bottom bunch are college work and Desperado isn't mine.

If you want brutal feedback

You can't sing Desperado - your singing needs significant work! I did like the guitar on the back track though...

Comfortably Numb was an interesting listen - sounded like the song but didnt at the same time. If you beef it up with more guitar work it could be fairly good.

I like the orchestral one, the bass line reminds me of another song and I can't for the life of me remember what, but I like it. Solo sounded good, there were the odd intervals which I thought didn't sound quite right, but literally just a couple. On the whole I like it.
I like the Jamrock one, the bass drum could come up in the mix a bit though.

Good ideas. I'm listening as I type. I like the buildup on the orchestral piece. Its painfully obvious its midi but you know that. The bass works well. It needs maybe some cymbals. I'd try adding a drum and bass flavour but keep to the melodic patterns, but you may have other ideas hehe

I'll listen to your other work another time. Keep it up and keep experimenting, but work on your production more than anything as it sounds like your songwriting skills are already there somewhere smile

Thanks for the feedback, it is greatly appreciated. I have been songwriting for about 6 months and I love it. Nothing better than coming up with something that sounds genuinely good (I lie, guitar soloing is equally as fun).

It is MIDI and it shows. I don't have the money to acquire a better program, but I can and do produce many songs on Cubase at college and home. I've not actually bothered to do it on these as it involves a lengthy transferral process, having to record each track individually through the soundcard. There are fifteen tracks on the Orchestral piece.

I'll be uploading more as I write them, listen to my stuff and I'll listen to yours.

Cheers.

The bass fader was actually quite high up in Jamrock. The problem was when we were recording it the gain was too low. I also hate the sound of it.

I love the bass line in the orchestral piece too. It's basically just an A5 chord. I wanted to get a bit more volume on it and also have a cello and contrabass but the program wouldn't let me.

I think I know which intervals you mean. I felt it needed a bit of variation rather than me just adding an instrument after each loop hehe

Yes sadly it is a program with terrible sound quality. However it's extremely easy to write into (although I wish you could write with proper notation) and has a heavy emphasis on guitar work such as bends etc which I've found to be better than other equivalent programs such as Reason or Finale. I hope to get some of these recorded next year when I have access to professional studios for free but I will have to wait and see.

I tried putting some drums in to the orchestral one but I couldn't get it to work very well. Definitely a project to work on and I want to make it into an Iron Maiden type epic. Drum n bass... maybe. I've never wrote anything like that so I might have a look.
