Nevermind

Blimey, 20 years old. I remember where I was when it came out... I remember queueing for the CD, and I remember being disappointed that Nirvana had "sold out" and gone commercial (I was full on into grunge).

Dug it out and put it on the iPod having seen the cover of Spin a few weeks ago, and was surprised how good the album was. I recall it being critically acclaimed at the time, but I actually hadn't appreciated how good a song writer Cobain was, nor the impact of Grohl on the band.

Just about to hit "buy" on the remastered version, despite the fact every remastered version I've heard has ruined the sound (Pearl Jam's Ten being a classic example).

Did anyone else just not "get" the whole Nevermind thing first time round, or am I in a minority here?

I posted this last week on another forum:

20 years this weeks since it was released and it sounds as fresh today as it did back then. Last year it was voted in as the number 1 album of all time amongst the youth network TripleJ, which is incredible seeing their target audience is 18-24.

RIP Kurt, you left us with a great gift.

On your own there. Personally I loved it. Before that I thought the pixies were a far better band than Nirvana - post Nevermind I was a convert, although the pixies were my first love.

And remember kids: Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not after you!

Whilst I like Bleach, I preferred the musicality of their later stuff. Bleach was a bit too samey - Na Na Na - Dudduddud, and repeat.

My favs are from In Utero - Rape me and All Apologies. I liked the juxtaposition of the quiet, almost acoustic, elements with the heavy guitar.

There was an interesting piece on Radio 4 yesterday afternoon about Kurt, and the question posed was what would he be doing now. Apparently he'd mentioned before he died that he was "tired of the screaming" and the conclusion was that he'd probably have gone very folky.

Surprised About a Girl doesn't feature given those two.

I'll reiterate my point in case I've not made myself clear - at the time I preferred In Utero. With the benefit of hindsight, I now "get" Nevermind and the later stuff.

I got it in the same way I got Ten but I didn't really listen to either at the time. Like yourself I was buried in the sludgier offerings: Tad, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Green River et al. Really liked Bleach at the time, though.

Yeah, I was big into the Sub Pop stuff too, especially Green River and Mudhoney. Actually, EGBDF came out in '91 as well!

Got my copy of Nevermind 20th Anniversary deluxe edition today. Very very cool. Music just isn't like that nowadays.

Listening to this now. I remember seeing them on TOTP playing or rather badly miming to teen spirit then a short while later they played territorial pissings on the Jonathan Ross show and totally blew me away so I rushed up to HMV on Oxford Street the very next day to buy Nevermind, I was 17 at the time and came along at just the right time for me Oh yes one of my all time favourite albums. I must say though I didnt have any time for the pretentious attitude they and all the other grungers had, if they didnt want to 'sell out' then then when offered a record contract just simply turn it down. But they made a lot of noise and were a great rock n roll band, a breath of fresh air after all the ridiculous 80s hair bands just as punk was to the pompous 70s goliaths.

Well worth a listen, its only available for 6 days so be quick.

Zane Lowe catches up with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Butch Vig. In a revealing interview they talk openly together for the first time about Kurt and the making of one of the most seminal albums in musical history.

Agreed. Massive PJ fan right back to the late 80s. Just ordered the 20th Anniversary Editions of Vs. and Vitalogy.

Absolutely! I don't think you are on your own. I know quite a few guitarists/band members who for them Nirvana (in particular Nevermind) is the reason why they do what they do now. Totally inspirational.

Couldn't agree more, on all three counts.

Bleach was much more visceral than Nevermind, PJ never made another album as complete as Ten (although VS came close), and Chris, Kim & the boys - although not at their altered-tuned best - certainly ticked all the angry growly grunge boxes on BMF

I was massively disappointed with the remastered Ten. It's too "clean" sounding and it loses Vedder's gruff tones.

I didn't "get" it when it first came out. I mean, it didn't have crazy-arsed guitar solos and seemed to miss a lot more. 10 years later, I picked up Nevermind in a HMV sale and actually quite enjoyed listening to it.
